DoubleSqueeze: Parallel Stochastic Gradient Descent with Double-Pass Error-Compensated Compression [PDF]
A standard approach in large scale machine learning is distributed stochastic gradient training, which requires the computation of aggregated stochastic gradients over multiple nodes on a network. Communication is a major bottleneck in such applications, and in recent years, compressed stochastic gradient methods such as QSGD (quantized SGD) and sparse

Boundaries of photosynthesis: adaptations of carbon fixation in extreme environments
Photosynthesis faces challenges from environmental extremes of temperature, pH, and salinity, limiting gas diffusion, modifying membrane fluidity, and destabilizing photochemical and biochemical reactions. Photosynthetic organisms have evolved unique adaptations overcoming these stresses and maintaining their photosynthetic activity.

Mitochondria contain two mitoribosome rescue factors, ICT1 and MTRFR (C12orf65). ICT1 also functions as a mitoribosomal protein in mice and humans, and its loss is lethal. Although Mtrfr knockout mice could not be generated, knockout zebrafish lines for ict1 and mtrfr were established.

Precarious employment and occupational injuries in the digital age ‒ where should we go from here?
There is growing demand for a clearer understanding of whether precarious work is a social determinant of health (1‒5) and whether non-standard workers with less job security are more vulnerable to adverse safety and health outcomes.

Energy dependence of the GAFCHROMIC LD‐V1 in the diagnostic radiographic modalities
Abstract The GAFCHROMIC LD‐V1 radiochromic film is widely used in dosimetry because it can provide high‐resolution two‐dimensional dose distributions without processing. This study aimed to evaluate the response characteristics at different effective energies, from the low‐energy range of mammography to the high‐energy range of computed tomography. Net

Abstract Purpose Histotripsy is a focal tumor therapy that utilizes focused ultrasound (US) to mechanically destroy tissue. To overcome visualization limitations of diagnostic US‐guidance, C‐arm cone beam CT (CBCT)‐guided histotripsy is being developed, for which a mobile C‐arm could increase accessibility. CBCT‐guided histotripsy uses a phantom with a

Evaluating the impact of PrEP on HIV and gonorrhea on a networked population of female sex workers [PDF]
Sexual contacts are the main spreading route of HIV. This puts sex workers at higher risk of infection even in populations where HIV prevalence is moderate or low. Alongside condom use, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective tool for sex workers to reduce their risk of HIV acquisition.

KIF5A p.Pro986Leu Risk Variant and Accelerated Progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
ABSTRACT This study explored the impact of KIF5A rs113247976 (p.Pro986Leu), a risk allele for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), on phenotypic variability in two Italian ALS cohorts (discovery, n = 865; replication, n = 1174). The minor allele (T) frequency was 0.015.
