The writhe of permutations and random framed knots [PDF]

open access: yesRandom Structures & Algorithms, 2016
We introduce and study the writhe of a permutation, a circular variant of the well-known inversion number. This simple permutation statistics has several interpretations, which lead to some interesting properties. For a permutation sampled uniformly at random, we study the asymptotics of the writhe, and obtain a non-Gaussian limit distribution.

Degradable, Skin‐Conformal Nanocomposite‐Based Bioelectronic Patches for High‐Fidelity Electrophysiology and Gesture‐Controlled Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A degradable, skin‐conformal bioelectronic patch combines a starch‐dominated nanocomposite conductor with a gelatin substrate to enable sensitive strain sensing, high‐fidelity electrocardiography, electromyography, electrooculography, and machine‐learning‐assisted gesture control.

The extended polar writhe: a tool for open curves mechanics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A measure of the writhing of a curve is introduced and is used to extend the C?lug?reanu? decomposition for closed curves, as well as the polar decomposition for curves bound between planes.

Bistable Isochoric Chiral Metamaterials with Reprogrammable Multiaxial Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An isochoric bistable rotational unit cell enables in situ modification of internal contact conditions post‐fabrication, without altering the global envelope dimensions of the surrounding architecture. By selectively switching between open and closed states, the tessellated chiral metamaterial can reprogram its volumetric response, including bulk ...

Deformation‐Tolerant Functional Elastomer Overlayers for Haze‐Assisted Light Extraction and Color Conversion in Stretchable Mechanoluminescent Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Functional elastomer overlayers are integrated onto stretchable ZnS:Cu‐PDMS mechanoluminescent films to regulate light after emission without modifying the emissive composite. NLC‐PU provides haze‐assisted light extraction to enhance green mechanoluminescence, while DCM‐NLC‐PU combines green‐to‐yellow‐orange color conversion with enhanced outward light

An Investigation of Linking Number, Twist, and Writhe, in Knots, Links, Ribbons, and Möbius Ribbons

open access: yes, 2016
A prominent formula in knot and ribbon theory is White\u27s formula that looks at the relationship between linking number, twist, and writhe. After a brief background in knot theory we look at knots, links, and diagrams of each and we examine their ...

Architectural Tuning of Bouligand Electrospun Laminates Enables Coupled Mechanical Robustness and Electromechanical Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioinspired Bouligand architectures are translated into biodegradable polymer laminates with integrated sensing, revealing how structural design governs multifunctional performance. A 20° interlayer rotation optimizes strength, flexibility, and electromechanical response, while embedded nanotube networks enable real‐time damage detection and wearable ...

Discovery of Small-scale Flows in the Void of a Coronal Mass Ejection with High-cadence Images Acquired by the Metis Coronagraph on Board Solar Orbiter

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
On 2022 March 26, the ESA Solar Orbiter mission observed the early evolution of a coronal mass ejection (CME). On that day, the spacecraft was at a heliocentric distance of 0.32 au and a longitude separation from Earth of 74 $\mathop{.}\limits^{\unicode ...
