Baltic sea ice thickness estimation based on X-band SAR data and background information

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology
In this study an operational sea ice thickness (SIT) estimation algorithm, based on HH-polarized X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, background information from the most recent, typically from the previous day, available daily Baltic Sea ice ...

Bridging Artificial Intelligence and Data Assimilation: The Data‐Driven Ensemble Weather Forecasting System ClimaX‐LETKF

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 10, October 2026.
We developed ClimaX‐LETKF, a weather forecasting system that combines the foundation machine learning‐based weather prediction model ClimaX with a conventional data assimilation system. The system achieves stable multiyear data assimilation cycling using NCEP upper‐air global observations.

X-SAR: The X-band synthetic aperture radar on board the Space Shuttle [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
The X-band synthetic aperture radar (X-SAR) is the German/Italian contribution to the NASA/JPL Shuttle Radar Lab missions as part of the preparation for the Earth Observation System (EOS) program. The Shuttle Radar Lab is a combination of several radars:

Estimation of Significant Wave Height Using Wave-Radar Images

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Characteristics of random ocean waves have been measured by different devices, and X-band marine radar is one of the typical devices. This study proposes an enhanced methodology for estimating the significant wave height of ocean waves through the ...

A Comparison between Drifter and X-Band Wave Radar for Sea Surface Current Estimation

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
This paper deals with exploitation of the wave radar system for sea surface current estimation in a coastal zone. In particular, we present the results of the processing of the radar data collected by an X-band marine radar installed in Capo Granitola ...

Geomorphic Imprints of Coseismic Uplift: Knickpoints and Landslides on the Noto Peninsula, Japan

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 10, October 2026.
River knickpoints and slow‐moving landslides show complementary spatial relationships with the vertical and horizontal deformation fields of the 2024 Mw 7.5 Noto Peninsula earthquake. Together, their distributions provide geomorphic information for evaluating cumulative landscape adjustment to repeated coseismic uplift at a regional scale.

Mapping the bathymetry of the Dee Estuary using wave inversions of marine radar image sequences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The bathymetry of the Dee Estuary in Liverpool Bay has been mapped using a non-linear wave inversion of marine X-band radar data. Comparisons are made with survey data produced using a combination of multibeam sonar, airborne LIDAR and Admiralty charts ...

Depositional and Hydrological Relationships Between Buried Dead Ice and the Active Layer in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: A Study of Sediment Geochemistry and Cation Concentrations

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 725-752, October/December 2026.
ABSTRACT The McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice‐free region in Antarctica, are home to a cold‐desert hydrologic system of glaciers, snowbanks, streams, and lakes. Freshwater is also stored as dead glacial ice, which is poorly constrained in terms of ion concentrations and interactions with both in situ and overlying sediments.
