Microsecond hydrodynamic interactions in dense colloidal dispersions probed at the European XFEL

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2021
Many soft-matter systems are composed of macromolecules or nanoparticles suspended in water. The characteristic times at intrinsic length scales of a few nanometres fall therefore in the microsecond and sub-microsecond time regimes.

Efficient overall water splitting in acid with anisotropic metal nanosheets

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Ru is one of the most active metals for oxygen evolution reaction, but it quickly dissolves in acidic electrolyte particularly in nanosized form. Here, the authors show that coral-like solid-solution Ru‒Ir consisting of 3 nm-thick sheets with only 6 at ...

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

Diffuse X-ray scattering from polished silicon: application of the distorted wave Born approximation

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, 2022
Measured diffuse X-ray scattering data for a `smooth' as well as for a `rough' silicon sample were fit to theoretical expressions within the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA).

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in

Adversarial robustness improvement for X-ray bone segmentation using synthetic data created from computed tomography scans

open access: yesScientific Reports
Deep learning-based image analysis offers great potential in clinical practice. However, it faces mainly two challenges: scarcity of large-scale annotated clinical data for training and susceptibility to adversarial data in inference.

MHz X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy using an acoustic levitator at the European XFEL

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation
The structural and dynamical properties of soft-matter systems play an important role in crystallization and nucleation theory. Despite their significance, the dynamical properties are still poorly understood because of experimental constraints and the ...

Adsorption of oleic acid on magnetite facets

open access: yesCommunications Chemistry, 2022
Metal oxide nanoparticles functionalized by organic molecules are important building blocks for nanocomposites. Here, the authors study the adsorption of oleic acid on magnetite (001) and (111) surfaces experimentally by SXRD, LEED, FT-IRRAS and XRR, and

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Operation of Photo Electron Spectrometers for Non-Invasive Photon Diagnostics at the European X-Ray Free Electron Laser

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometers with microchannel plate detectors and fast digitizer electronics are versatile and powerful devices for providing non-invasive single-shot photon diagnostics at a MHz repetition rate X-ray free-electron lasers ...
