Estimation of plasma parameters of X-pinch with time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy

open access: yesMatter and Radiation at Extremes, 2023
We estimate the parameters of a Cu plasma generated by an X-pinch by comparing experimentally measured x-rays with synthetic data. A filtered absolute extreme ultraviolet diode array is used to measure time-resolved x-ray spectra with a spectral ...

Heterogeneity in Short Gamma-ray Bursts

open access: yes, 2011
We analyze the Swift/BAT sample of short gamma-ray bursts, using an objective Bayesian Block procedure to extract temporal descriptors of the bursts' initial pulse complexes (IPCs). The sample comprises 12 and 41 bursts with and without extended emission

Burst Detector X-Ray IIR [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The Burst Detector X-Ray (BDX) instrument for the Block IIR series of Global Positioning System satellites is described. The BDX instrument can locate and characterize exoatmospheric nuclear detonations by using four sensors consisting of sets of filters over silicon diodes to detect x rays of various energies from the burst.

MAXI observations of long X-ray bursts [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, 2016
Abstract We report nine long X-ray bursts from neutron stars, detected with the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). Some of these bursts lasted for hours, and hence are qualified as superbursts, which are prolonged thermonuclear flashes on neutron stars and are relatively rare events.

The hard X-ray behavior of Aql X-1 during type-I bursts

open access: yes, 2013
We report the discovery of an anti-correlation between the soft and the hard X-ray lightcurves of the X-ray binary Aql X-1 when bursting. This behavior may indicate that the corona is cooled by the soft X-ray shower fed by the type-I X-ray bursts, and ...

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

NuSTAR Observations of GS 1826-238 in the Extended Soft State

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We report on the first focused NuSTAR observations of the neutron star low mass X-ray binary GS 1826-238, the “Clocked Burster,” since the extended soft state began in 2014.

The influence of accretion geometry on the spectral evolution during thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray bursts

open access: yes, 2014
Neutron star (NS) masses and radii can be estimated from observations of photospheric radius-expansion X-ray bursts, provided the chemical composition of the photosphere, the spectral colour-correction factors in the observed luminosity range, and the ...
