Soft x-ray imaging with toroidal mirrors

The fabrication of small toroidal mirrors in tandem for x-ray imaging is discussed. First, a male mandrel is made by grinding and polishing a molybdenum rod. Then. a glass replica is cast and lightly polished. The method of polishing the male mandrel is described. A photograph of a copper mesh taken with a 8.3-A x ray is shown.

X-Ray Performance Of The LAMAR Protoflight Mirror

A grazing incidence x-ray mirror in the Kirkpatrick-Baez geometry was constructed and tested. Its geometric aperture measures 20 by 30 cm and its length is 100 cm. The focal length is 3.4 m measured from the front to the focal plane. It is the first of eight mirrors to be built for the LAMAR experiment of the Shuttle High Energy Astrophysics Laboratory.

Foil X-ray mirrors

Nested thin foil reflectors have made possible light weight, inexpensive and fast grazing incidence X-ray mirrors for astronomical spectroscopy over a broad band. These mirrors were developed at Goddard for the US Shuttle program and were flown on NASA's shuttleborne Astro-l mission in December 1990.

X-ray interferometry of surfaces with Fresnel mirrors

With a small double-mirror setup, we used grazing-x-ray interferometry to study nanometric steps. These one-dimensional steps were microfabricated upon the surface of one of the two mirrors; the other mirror provided the reference wave. Two geometries were studied.
