Flat mirrors can change the direction of an X-ray beam without distorting its wavefront. Elliptically figured mirrors can focus X-rays onto a spot with nanometer dimensions.

Mirrors for nanofocusing x-ray beams
SPIE Proceedings, 2002Nanofocused x-ray beams provide a powerful tool for studying materials at the submicron level. One approach to achieve such a small-sized focused beam is to use a pair of mirrors, in the Kirkpatrick Baez (KB) arrangement. Each mirror focuses the beam in one direction and has an elliptical profile.

Fabrication of an X-Ray Mirror Used in a Soft X-Ray Microscope
2007Reflective X-ray optics used in a soft X-ray microscope require a super-smooth surface and highly accurate figure. We considered a Wolter type I mirror as a condenser optic. The mirror of 1/4 X magnification was optimized for observing living cells at a wavelength of 2.3 nm in a laboratory prototype.

Nature, 1967OUR search for a suitable dispersion technique to identify ultrasoft X-radiation (wavelength λ>20 A) led us to consider the wavelength dependence of the critical angle of total reflexion. A critical angle of total reflexion exists only if the reflector is transparent to radiation.
