In the past half decade or so there has been a technological revolution in our ability to generate, control, manipulate, focus, and detect x rays. The emergence of x-ray lasers and synchrotron insertion devices has increased the brightness of laboratory x-ray sources 8 to 12 orders of magnitude over what was available in the late 1960s.

X-Ray Optics: Imperfections of Optical Flats and Their Effect on the Reflection of X-Rays
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1949It has been observed that some stray light (x-rays) is thrown into the neighborhood of the focus obtained if x-rays are focused by a bent optical flat. Most of this extra light is due to imperfections of the optical flats, while halation, Fresnel diffraction at the slits and air scattering make only minor contributions.

The X-ray optics for X-ray pulsar navigation
SPIE Proceedings, 2016The effective X-ray optics is a key premise for X-ray pulsar detection and navigation. However, it is very difficult to focus the X-ray photons through refraction for the reason that the X-ray photon is very easy to be absorbed by the materials. The most effective ways for the X-ray focusing is reflection.

Diffraction of x rays in capillary optics
Applied Optics, 2000Propagation of x rays generated by a small-diameter incoherent source through the capillary waveguide that satisfies the multimode condition is studied with the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory. The strong influence of diffraction on the propagation is demonstrated.
