The Origin of the Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources [PDF]
Recently, several ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources were shown to host a neutron star (NS) accretor. We perform a suite of evolutionary calculations, which show that, in fact, NSs are the dominant type of ULX accretor.

Stability of mass transfer from massive giants: double black hole binary formation and ultraluminous X-ray sources [PDF]
The mass transfer in binaries with massive donors and compact companions, when the donors rapidly evolve after their main sequence, is one of the dominant formation channels of merging double stellar-mass black hole binaries.

Supercritical accretion disks in ultraluminous X-ray sources and SS 433 [PDF]
The brightest extragalactic black holes emit X-rays with intensities that are thousands of times greater than those from black holes within our Galaxy. However, optical spectra suggest these different sources may be more similar than once thought.

Extragalactic X-ray Sources [PDF]
A review is given of the physical properties of extragalactic X-ray sources. The generation of X-rays as thermal bremsstrahlung, by the synchrotron mechanism or by Compton Scattering, is discussed. It is shown that each may be important depending on the circumstances.

On the maximum accretion luminosity of magnetized neutron stars: connecting X-ray pulsars and ultraluminous X-ray sources [PDF]
We study properties of luminous X-ray pulsars using a simplified model of the accretion column. The maximal possible luminosity is calculated as a function of the neutron star (NS) magnetic field and spin period. It is shown that the luminosity can reach

The novel high-pressure/high-temperature compound Co12P7 determined from synchrotron data
The structural properties of cobalt phosphides were investigated at high pressures and temperatures to better understand the behavior of metal-rich phosphides in Earth and planetary interiors. Using single-crystal X-ray diffraction synchrotron data and a

The Nature of Ultraluminous Compact X-Ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies [PDF]
Studies were made of ASCA spectra of seven ultraluminous compact X-ray sources in nearby spiral galaxies: M33 X-8, M81 X-6, IC 342 source 1, Dwingeloo 1 X-1, NGC 1313 source B, and two sources in NGC 4565.

Local structure of liquid gallium under pressure
In situ high energy X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) measurements, microtomography and reverse Monte Carlo simulations were used to characterize the local structure of liquid gallium up to 1.9 GPa.

Ultraluminous X-ray Sources [PDF]
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) represent a class of binary systems that are more luminous than any black hole in our Galaxy. The nature of these objects remained unclear for a long time. The most popular models for the ULXs involve either intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) or stellar-mass black holes accreting at super-Eddington rates.

Recent advances in ultrafast X-ray sources
Over more than a century, X-rays have transformed our understanding of the fundamental structure of matter and have been an indispensable tool for chemistry, physics, biology, materials science and related fields.
