The galactic distribution and physical nature of X-ray transient sources is investigated. Two types of transients are considered. The observational data on 41 X-ray transient sources are given, and the average parameters of hard and soft X-ray transients are estimated.

X-ray variability in transient X-ray sources

The X-ray variability of transient X-ray binaries is analyzed in terms of the orbital motion of the neutron star, centrifugal inhibition of accretion and of the variable moss loss rate due to activity of the optical counterpart. The systems A0535+26 and V0332+53 are studied in this respect.

Transient soft X-ray sources

A rocket observation of cosmic soft X-rays suggests the existence of transient, recurrent soft X-ray sources which are found variable during the flight time of the rocket. Some of the soft X-ray sources thus far reported are considered to be of this time. These sources are listed in Table I, and their positions are shown in Figure 2.

THE transient X-ray sources Ariel 1118–61 and Ariel 0535 + 26 have periods of 405 s (ref. 1) and 114 s (ref. 2) respectively. Rappaport and McClintock3 reported the discovery of a 283-s period in the X-ray binary 3U0900–40 (a ‘continuous’ source) which is known to have an orbital period Porb = 8.95 d.

Observations of A0535+26 transient X-ray source

Observations of the transient X-ray source A0535+26 obtained with the Signe-2MP instrument aboard Prognoz 6 and 7 are reported. Peak fluxes for the flares of this source are plotted, and the average count for a frame is studied as a function of the rotation angle (the measurement time was 10.5 hours).
