Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology, 1980Nine kidneys with typical xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XP) involvement were investigated on the occurrence of bacteria, bacterial fragments and antigen, in light microscopy using Gram staining and immunohistochemistry, and by electron microscopy. The present study did not reveal any occurrence of bacteria, bacterial fragments or antigen.

Xanthogranulomatous lesions have been reported in many anatomical sites but only 10 cases involving the bladder have been described, 7 of which were associated with urachal adenoma. To our knowledge, we report the first instance of xanthogranulomatous cystitis in the English literature.
