▪ Abstract The need for an alternative source of donor organs, together with the expansion of scientific data in this field, has focused attention on xenotransplantation as a possible alternative to allotransplantation in the treatment of patients with end-stage disease of vital organs. However, xenotransplantation is rarely successful.

Transplantation of solid organs (heart, lung, liver, and kidney) from swine to humans would solve the current critical shortage of cadaver organs needed by patients with end‐stage disease of these organs. In addition, transplantation between distant species (discordant xenografting) will require an understanding of a number of ...

Although efforts have been made to expand the pool of donor lung allografts for human lung transplantation, a shortage remains. Lung xenotransplantation has been proposed as an alternative approach, but lung xenotransplantation in humans has not yet been reported. In addition, significant biological and ethical barriers will have to be addressed before

The severe shortage of human donor hearts has prompted several investigators to develop alternative strategies using cross-specie organs or xenografts. Unlike human allotransplantation, in which the important antigenic differences between donor and recipient are confined to the major histocompatibility and blood group antigens, xenotransplantation is ...

Purpose of review Organ transplantation is an effective treatment for selected patients with end-stage organ disease or specific cancer types. Its main limitations are the chronic lack of grafts and the lifetime need for immunosuppression.

Expectations are high on cellular therapy. Being fundamental to elucidate organogenesis, it is unlikely that embryonic stem cells will be used for clinical purposes. Postembryonic stage, developing cells are, therefore, the front-runner for regenerative medicine.

Cardiac xenotransplantation has entered an exciting era, marked by numerous considerable advances in the field, and continues to be of great interest because of its potential ability in ameliorating the current constraints of limited allograft availability. This review aims to examine recent progress in this rapidly changing discipline.Although several

Hepatocyte Xenotransplantation
2012Xenotransplantation of hepatocytes is a future promise to treat liver diseases when there is a formal indication for transplantation. In this chapter, we describe techniques for hepatocyte xenotransplantation. The process was divided into three main steps: hepatocyte isolation, transplantation, and identification of donor cells in the recipient.
