Effects of Meloidogyne incognita on agronomic parameters and structural changes in eggplant (Solanum gilo Raddi) roots treated with Purpureocillium lilacinum

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Meloidogyne incognita impairs eggplant growth through gall formation with changes in root cell wall components and vascular tissue disruption, while the biocontrol agent Purpureocillium lilacinum mitigates these effects by reducing nematode infection. Abstract Meloidogyne spp. induce structural changes during the development of root‐knot galls, leading

Resisting Xylella fastidiosa: xylem anatomical changes in the susceptible olive cultivar Cellina di Nardò after long‐term infection

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
After long‐term infection, the susceptible O. europaea cultivar Cellina di Nardò modified its wood anatomical traits as an adaptive response to counteract Xylella fastidiosa, exhibiting spontaneous canopy restoration. Abstract The Xylella fastidiosa subsp.

Unveiling contrasting iron efficiency strategies in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes under iron deficiency

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Common bean genotypes differ in their iron acquisition through distinct Strategy I responses and root exudation patterns. Abstract Iron (Fe) deficiency in food crops, particularly on calcareous soils, limits productivity and human nutrition. This study investigated two common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) genotypes, Guaymí (high Fe‐accumulating, HI) and ...

OsPIP2;1 impacts root hydraulic conductance and is a candidate gene for a drought avoidance QTL on rice chromosome 7

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
In this study, we identified a rice plasma membrane intrinsic aquaporin (OsPIP2;1) as the candidate gene for a chromosome 7 locus driving drought avoidance, supported by established and novel physiological experiments measuring root hydraulic conductance in near isogenic and RNAi knockdown lines.

Advancing the pneumatic method to assess xylem vulnerability to embolism among distinct growth forms

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Our study shows that pneumatic vulnerability curves can be constructed across contrasting growth forms, with P50 showing the closest agreement across methods. Repeated relative water content measurements improved water potential estimation for graminoid culms. Abstract Drought‐driven plant mortality is closely linked to xylem embolism. Building useful,
