A number of plasmid-associated proteins (YOPs) of Y. pseudotuberculosis are induced and expressed at high levels when the pathogen is grown at 37 degrees C in absence of Ca2+ ions. These proteins were recovered both from the outer membrane fraction and the culture supernatant.

The growth of Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in Yersinia enrichment broth according to Ossmer (YSEO) was investigated. Y. enterocolitica reached a higher concentration than Y. pseudotuberculosis but both always exceeded 10(6)CFU/ml. The medium may be useful for the detection of both species in foods.

Infection of human enterocyte-like cells with rotavirus enhances invasiveness of Yersinia enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis

Mixed infection with rotavirus and either Yersinia enterocolitica or Y. pseudotuberculosis was analysed in Caco-2 cells, an enterocyte-like cell line highly susceptible to these pathogens. Results showed an increase of bacterial adhesion and internalisation in rotavirus-infected cells.

Interaction between Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Y. enterocolitica and fish cells.

Virulent strains of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Y. enterocolitica cultured at 10 degrees C were studied with respect to their interaction with cultured fish cells. Infection with Yersinia at 25 degrees C resulted in the formation of pseudopodia and the adherence of bacteria to the cell surface.
