ULAS J141623.94$ + $134836.3 - a faint common proper motion companion of a nearby L dwarf. Serendipitous discovery of a cool brown dwarf in UKIDSS DR6

open access: yes, 2010
New near-infrared large-area sky surveys (e.g. UKIDSS, CFBDS, WISE) go deeper than 2MASS and aim at detecting brown dwarfs lurking in the Solar neighbourhood which are even fainter than the latest known T-type objects, so-called Y dwarfs.

The Vegan Villain Sets Out to The End of Summer: Functionalized Coatings as Biohybrid UV‐Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study introduces biohybrid coatings incorporating E. coli biomass expressing photoconvertible fluorescent proteins as UV‐A responsive elements. Upon irradiation at 400 nm, the coatings exhibit an irreversible fluorescence shift from green to red within 15 min. Notably, the photoconversion capability is retained after >1 year of storage.

A Volume-limited Sample of Ultracool Dwarfs. II. The Substellar Age and Mass Functions in the Solar Neighborhood

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present the most precise constraints to date for the mass and age distributions of single ultracool dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, based on an updated volume-limited sample of 504 L, T, and Y dwarfs within 25 pc.

Toward Robust Atmospheric Retrieval on Cloudy L Dwarfs: the Impact of Thermal and Abundance Profile Assumptions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Constraining L dwarf properties from their spectra is challenging. Near-infrared (NIR) spectra probe a limited range of pressures, while many species condense within their photospheres. Condensation creates two complexities: gas-phase species “rain out” (

UKIDSS detections of cool brown dwarfs - proper motions of 14 known $>$T5 dwarfs and discovery of three new T5.5-T6 dwarfs

open access: yes, 2012
AIMS: We contribute to improving the census of cool brown dwarfs (late-T and Y dwarfs) in the immediate solar neighbourhood. METHODS: By combining near-infrared (NIR) data of UKIDSS with mid-infrared WISE and other available NIR (2MASS) and red optical ...

M dwarfs in the b201 tile of the VVV survey: Colour-based Selection, Spectral Types and Light Curves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The intrinsically faint M dwarfs are the most numerous stars in the Galaxy, have main-sequence lifetimes longer than the Hubble time, and host some of the most interesting planetary systems known to date.

Treatment with Plasma Activated (Salt) Water Sterilizes Macromolecular Coatings While Maintaining Their Integrity and Functionality

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
PDMS samples were covalently coated with mucin glycoproteins and then treated with either plasma activated water (PAW) or saline (PAS) as a means of disinfection. The samples could be successfully sterilized without compromising the structural integrity or functionality of those coatings.

Discovery of 11 New T Dwarfs in the Two Micron All-Sky Survey, Including a Possible L/T Transition Binary [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We present the discovery of 11 new T dwarfs, found during the course of a photometric survey for mid-to-late T dwarfs in the 2MASS Point Source Catalog and from a proper motion selected sample of ultracool dwarfs in the 2MASS Working Database.

Y-linked Mendelian inheritance of giant and dwarf male morphs in shell-brooding cichlids [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2014
Behavioural variation among conspecifics is typically contingent on individual state or environmental conditions. Sex-specific genetic polymorphisms are enigmatic because they lack conditionality, and genes causing adaptive trait variation in one sex may reduce Darwinian fitness in the other.
