YAG laser meloplasty and blepharoplasty

Twenty-eight patients have undergone facelift and blepharoplasty in which the YAG laser scalpel was used. The laser is able to produce an incision with excellent hemostasis. The patients in this series demonstrated markedly diminished blood loss during surgery and reduced bruising, swelling, pain, and discomfort postoperatively.

YAG laser in ophthalmology

A summary of using near (Nd) and middle (Er) infrared YAG laser systems in ophthalmology surgery is given in the paper. The report on twelve years of clinical experience with the ophthalmic Nd:YAG laser system (λ=1.06 μm) operating alternatively on Q-switched or mode-locked regimes is accomplished.

Neodymium-YAG Laser Iridotomy

Results of neodymium-YAG laser iridotomy in 34 eyes with narrow drainage angles are reported. Irido-tomies appeared patent on slit-lamp examination in 32 (94%) eyes. Complications included failed patency of iridotomy and acute elevation of intraocular pressure.

Nd-YAG Laser in Our Experience

The Authors report on their experience with Microruptor 2, Fankhauser’s YAG laser. Over a period of about 18 months, approximately 500 patients with different pathological conditions of the eye were treated. The treatments were noninvasive and given to outpatients under surface anesthesia. The instrument is suitable for use in cases requiring splitting

Q-switching the Erbium-YAG Laser

An erbium-YAG laser has been Q-switched by two methods; a mechanical technique employing a rotating output coupler and electro-optically utilizing a LiNbO3 crystal. The performances of each technique are assessed and compared. Pulse durations of 150 to 850 ns have been produced, with pulse energies of 1 to 16 mJ depending on the technique used.

Broncholith Removal using the YAG Laser

An 85-year-old woman presented with a broncholith in the intermediate bronchus that could not be extracted with either flexible or rigid bronchoscopes. A YAG laser was used to fragment this broncholith so that it could be removed in pieces through a bronchoscope. Chemical composition and morphology of the broncholith were determined.

Neodymium-Yag Laser for Posterior Capsulotomy

We used the neodymium-YAG laser to perform discission of the posterior capsule in 49 eyes of 47 patients who had undergone previous extracapsular cataract extraction. The visual results were encouraging, with an improvement in visual acuity of one or more Snellen lines in 45 eyes and an improvement of three or more Snellen lines in 33 eyes.

Evanescent coupling alternatives for YAG lasers

Diffraction gratings are proposed as an alternative technique to couple a laser diode pump beam into the YAG crystal of a solid-state laser. These binary diffraction gratings are on the long axis of the crystal and are etched in high refractive index coating material.

Neodymium-YAG Laser Sclerostomy in Primates

A one-stage sclerostomy procedure was performed "noninvasively" in four cynomolgus monkeys solely with the neodymium-YAG laser. The neodymium (Nd)-YAG laser was focused, for the most part, a few diopters behind the focus of the helium-neon aiming beam.
