What motivates West African cocoa farmers to value trees? Taking the 4 W approach to the heart of the field

open access: yesPeople and Nature
West Africa, the largest cocoa‐producing region globally, has experienced significant deforestation in recent decades, leading countries to implement large‐scale agroforestry policies; however, most studies on farmers' adoption of agroforestry fail to ...

Evidence-Based Behavioral Interventions to Improve the Double-Duty Actions Impacting the Dual Burden of Malnutrition: A Scoping Review. [PDF]

open access: yesFood Sci Nutr
No scoping review summarizes evidence‐based behavioral interventions that improve double duty actions to prevent stunting and obesity. Inclusion criteria included articles from 2010 to 2024, behavioral interventions to improve breastfeeding, young child nutrition, and antenatal care, and were set in sub‐Saharan Africa or Asia.

High intraspecific growth variability despite strong evolutionary legacy in an Amazonian forest

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 26, Issue 12, Page 2135-2146, December 2023., 2023
Based on 36 years of diameter surveys for 7961 trees of 138 species, we found the greatest variation in growth between individuals within the same species in an Amazonian forest, although taxonomy explained a third of the variation. Species growth was conserved up to the genus and predicted by root, wood and leaf traits.

Geographic, Taxonomic and Metric Gaps in Biodiversity Research Limit Evidence-Based Conservation in Agricultural Landscapes: An Umbrella Review. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Lett
We systematically reviewed 200 meta‐analyses (gathering over 9000 primary studies) on the effects of agriculture on biodiversity in croplands. Our systematic map of secondary research highlights significant geographical and taxonomic gaps, uncovering an overfocus on simple biodiversity metrics and on individual agricultural practices rather than ...

Thresholds for persistent leaf photochemical damage predict plant drought resilience in a tropical rainforest

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 239, Issue 2, Page 576-591, July 2023., 2023
Summary Water stress can cause declines in plant function that persist after rehydration. Recent work has defined ‘resilience’ traits characterizing leaf resistance to persistent damage from drought, but whether these traits predict resilience in whole‐plant function is unknown.

Nutrient‐based species selection is a prevalent driver of community assembly and functional trait space in tropical forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 111, Issue 6, Page 1218-1230, June 2023., 2023
Our results demonstrate that soil nutrient‐based species selection is a prevalent driver of community assembly in tropical forests, a process mediated by key functional traits within the leaf and wood economics spectrum. Functional space size and its filling increase with soil nutrient concentration, whereas niche vacancy decreases.

Analysis of Land Use Change in the N'ZI Watershed of Côte d'Ivoire Using Landsat Satellite Images

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2023
Uncontrolled population growth and strong industrialization are enormous pressures on natural resources. To monitor land use changes in the N'ZI watershed, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) were used from three satellite images ...

Multiplane Image Restoration Using Multivariate Curve Resolution: An Alternative Approach to Deconvolution in Conventional Brightfield Microscopy

open access: yesPhotonics, 2023
Three-dimensional reconstruction in brightfield microscopy is challenging since a 2D image includes from in-focus and out-of-focus light which removes the details of the specimen’s structures.

Evenness mediates the global relationship between forest productivity and richness

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 111, Issue 6, Page 1308-1326, June 2023., 2023
Collectively, these results demonstrate that evenness is an integral component of the relationship between biodiversity and productivity, and that the attenuating effect of richness on forest productivity might be partly explained by low evenness in speciose communities.

Evolution of shrinkage, real density, porosity, heat and mass transfer coefficients during indirect solar drying of cocoa beans

open access: yesJournal of the Saudi Society of Agricultural Sciences, 2019
Drying is a main process of conservation used for cocoa beans and it is so essential to control its drying parameters. In this study, shrinkage, density, porosity, and heat and mass transfer coefficients of cocoa beans during indirect solar drying were ...
