Comparison of oral and intraperitoneal toxicity of yessotoxin towards mice
Toxicon, 2002Currently, yessotoxin is regulated among the toxins in the diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) complex. Yessotoxin is equally acutely toxic towards mice upon intraperitoneal injections as those algal toxins giving diarrhea, but is not diarrheagenic.

Paraptosis-like cell death induced by yessotoxin
Toxicology in Vitro, 2011This study shows that BC3H1 myoblast cell lines exposed to 100 nM yessotoxin (YTX) undergo a form of programmed cell death distinct from apoptosis and with features resembling paraptosis. Morphologically, cells treated with YTX reveal extensive cytoplasmic vacuolation, mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum swelling, uncondensed chromatin and ...

Effects of yessotoxin (YTX) on the skeletal muscle: an update
Food Additives & Contaminants: Part A, 2008Yessotoxins (YTXs) are algal toxins originally included in the diarrheic toxins. After oral intake, YTXs induce only ultra-structural changes (packages of swollen mitochondria) in cardiac cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of YTX on the other contractile striated tissue, the skeletal muscle, in vitro and in vivo.

Effect of mouse strain and gender on LD50 of yessotoxin
Toxicon, 2008The aim of the present study was to determine whether the intraperitoneal LD(50) for yessotoxin (YTX) in mice varies with strain or gender. Thirty-six male and 36 female mice, of body weight 16-20 g, from each of the strains ICR (CD-1), Swiss (CFW-1) and NMRI were employed. They were not fasted before YTX treatment.

Polyhydroxylated amide analogs of yessotoxin from Protoceratium reticulatum
Toxicon, 2005Two analogs of yessotoxin were isolated from extracts of a culture of Protoceratium reticulatum. The structures of the analogs were identified as trihydroxylated amides of 41a-homoyessotoxin (1) and 9-methyl-41a-homoyessotoxin (2) by one- and two-dimensional 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and LC-MS3 analyses.

A slot blot procedure for the measurement of yessotoxins by a functional assay
Toxicon, 2007We originally developed a functional assay for the detection of yessotoxins (YTX) based on its capacity to induce dose-dependent changes in cellular levels of two marker proteins, consisting of E-cadherin and an E-cadherin fragment (ECRA100) in epithelial cells.

Extraction and cleaning methods to detect yessotoxins in contaminated mussels
Analytical Biochemistry, 2007Yessotoxin (YTX) and its analogues are a newly recognized group of toxins with increased presence in shellfish in recent years. They can be quantified by various functional assays due to their interaction with phosphodiesterases (PDEs). One of these assays detects the binding between the YTX and the fluorescently labeled PDE I using fluorescence ...

Identification of Protoceratium reticulatum as the biogenetic origin of yessotoxin
Natural Toxins, 1997AbstractYessotoxin (YTX), a disulfated polyether toxin, was isolated from cultured cells of the marine dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum and unambiguously identified by high‐performance liquid chromatography, 1H NMR, and MS data. The result is the first to confirm toxigenicity of this species and demonstrate it as one of the biogenetic origins ...

A functional assay for yessotoxins
2003This paper describes the properites of a cell-based assay for the detection and quantification of yessotoxin-group toxins contaminating shellfish extracts. The procedure exploits the property of yessotoxin to induce the accumulation of a 100 kDa fragment of E-cadherin in epithelial cells.
