Assessing discarding at sea using a length-structured yield-per-recruit model

Fisheries Research, 1997
Abstract Discarding at sea is a common practice in fisheries. Part of the catch is often discarded because fish are too small to be marketed, or are bycatch. Regulations such as trip limits or quota limitations also provide fishermen with a strong incentive to discard fish that are above their quota and to high grade to maximize profits.

Parameter Uncertainty and Simple Yield-per-Recruit Analysis

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1988
Abstract Simple yield-per-recruit analysis is a useful stock assessment tool for fishery management. We present a Monte Carlo-based method that incorporates available knowledge of parameter uncertainty on the three-parameter yield-per-recruit model of Beverton and Holt.

A Generalized Computer Program For the Ricker Model of Equilibrium Yield Per Recruitment

Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, 1967
The Ricker method for predicting the yield per recruitment from a stock of fish under various conditions is superior to that of Beverton and Holt (1957) under most conditions because it permits greater flexibility of the input of growth and mortality data.

Yield-per-recruit modeling of two piscivores in a Midwestern reservoir: A Bayesian approach

Fisheries Research, 2017
Abstract Walleye Sander vitreus and hybrid striped bass Morone chrysops x M. saxatilis fisheries are supported by annual stockings in many US midwestern reservoirs. To maximize return to the angler, yield-per-recruit models are often used to evaluate expected yield and assist managers to determine which regulation to implement, generally length ...

Yield per Recruit and Management Recommendations for Alaska Plaice in the Eastern Bering Sea

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1990
Abstract Adult Alaska plaice Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus are abundant over the continental shelf (40–110-m depths) during the summer, move to the outer shelf during the winter, and return to the shelf in spring. Female Alaska plaice mature at a total length of about 31 cm (6–7 years), and peak spawning occurs during April.

Some conceptual remarks on yield per recruit

Fisheries Research, 1992
Abstract Computations needed to carry out yield-per-recruit (YPR) analysis are examined in order to provide an in-depth interpretation of this method. The following conclusions are reached. (a) When used for management purposes, YPR computations implicitly set a relationship between spawning stock biomass (SSB) and recruitment (R), and yield per ...

Mixed-Species Yield-per-Recruitment Analyses Accounting for Technological Interactions

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1984
Multipecies fishery assessment models may be divided into two general categories: those involving analyses of the trophic interdependence of species (biological interactions) and those addressing the question of co-occurrence in fishing gear (technological interactions). Certainly, both categories of interactions may occur simultaneously. Nevertheless,

Age, growth, mortality, and yield-per-recruit for nagroor, Pomadasys kakaan, in Kuwait’s waters

Fisheries Research, 2002
Abstract The age, growth and mortality of nagroor, Pomadasys kakaan , were determined from sectioned otoliths of fish from Kuwait waters. Estimated parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function for pooled data were L ∞ =62.16 cm, K =0.27 per year, and t 0 =−0.47 year ( n =1183).

Updated Yield-per-Recruit Information on the Tortugas Pink Shrimp Fishery

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1986
Abstract Portions of a 1979 analysis dealing with optimum-size considerations in the Tortugas, Florida, pink shrimp (Penaeus duorarum) fishery are updated. The 1979 management advice remains essentially the same. The current target minimum size of 103 mm total length theoretically should produce a 14-20% gain, compared to unregulated conditions, in ...

Estimation of Partial Recruitment and Yield per Recruit for an Otter Trawl Fishery for Deepwater Redfish

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1984
Abstract The Canadian deepwater redfish (Sebastes mentella) fishery in the Atlantic ocean tends to be concentrated in a limited depth range to maximize catch rates and optimize size composition of the catches that vary with depth. Thus, the assumption of Beverton and Holt's yield-per-recruit analysis that all fish are equally subject to fishing ...
