Shear induced drainage in foamy yield-stress fluids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Shear induced drainage of a foamy yield stress fluid is investigated using MRI techniques. Whereas the yield stress of the interstitial fluid stabilizes the system at rest, a fast drainage is observed when a horizontal shear is imposed.

Prevalence and Trajectory of Household Material Hardship Among Children With Advanced Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background/Objectives Families of children with advanced cancer living in poverty experience inferior outcomes including poor parent mental health and worse child quality of life. Household material hardship (HMH: food, housing, transportation, and/or utility insecurity) is a modifiable poverty exposure—and potential intervention target—that ...

The normal yield stress

open access: yes, 2018
Normal stresses in complex fluids lead to new flow phenomena because they can be comparable to or even larger than the shear stress itself. In addition, they are of paramount importance for formulating and testing constitutive equations for predicting non-viscometric flow behavior.

Influence of Mortar Rheology on Aggregate Settlement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The influence of the rheology of fresh concrete on the settlement of aggregate is examined. Fresh concrete exhibits a yield stress that, under certain conditions, prevents the settlement of coarse aggregate, although its density is larger than that of ...

Elastic Convection in Vibrated Viscoplastic Fluids

open access: yes, 2006
We observe a new type of behavior in a shear thinning yield stress fluid: freestanding convection rolls driven by vertical oscillation. The convection occurs without the constraint of container boundaries yet the diameter of the rolls is spontaneously ...

Financial Burden Associated With Hospitalisation Among Families of Childhood Brain Tumours in Australia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Families of children with cancer experience significant financial strain, even with universal healthcare. Indirect costs, such as productivity losses and non‐medical expenses, are rarely included in economic evaluations, and little is known about how effectively financial aid programmes alleviate this burden. Childhood brain tumours

The Yield Condition in the Mobilization of Yield-Stress Materials in Distensible Tubes

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper we investigate the yield condition in the mobilization of yield-stress materials in distensible tubes. We discuss the two possibilities for modeling the yield-stress materials prior to yield: solid-like materials and highly-viscous fluids ...

“Everything flows?”: elastic effects on startup flows of yield-stress fluids

open access: yesRheologica Acta, 2017
It is now 30 years since Barnes and Walters published a provocative paper in which they asserted that the yield stress is an experimental artifact. We now know that the situation is far more complicated than understood at the time, and that the mechanics

Infection Control Practices for Vascular Access Management in Hemodialysis: Results From a Nationwide Survey of Japanese National University Hospitals

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Bloodstream infections due to repeated vascular access (VA) puncture and circuit connections remain major concerns in hemodialysis. Therefore, we examined current practices for glove, disinfectant, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use according to VA type in national university hospitals in Japan.

Investigation of the numerical simulation of debris flow fluid with concern of phase transition

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
From a variety of yield stress fluid models, an elastoviscoplastic Herschel-Bulkley (EVPHB) model written in 3D is selected and coupled with a Finite Element Method with Lagrangian Integration Points (FEMLIP) to solve boundary value problems with large ...
