Paths of Erasure and Trails of Resistance in a Neo‐Settler‐Colonial City

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 55, Issue 6, Page 1735-1757, November 2023., 2023
Abstract Urban displacement is receiving growing visibility within urban studies. However, most literature centres on the logic of late capitalism and tends to neglect colonial history and local resistance to displacement. This paper takes an alternative path: it relates (a) the history of colonialism and ethnic cleansing of the city of Jaffa with (b ...

The Significance of ISIS's State Building in Syria

open access: yesMiddle East Policy, Volume 30, Issue 2, Page 126-145, Summer 2023., 2023
Abstract Researchers and policy makers appear to hold a deeply rooted reluctance to acknowledge, let alone address, the significance of ISIS's state building. Those who have engaged with this issue have tended to traverse the analytical dead end of legalistic questions and themes, inevitably concluding that ISIS's efforts fell short of the threshold of

Pure‐istan: Gender and Genocide in Pakistan

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ongoing genocidal violence against the Baloch nation. It highlights how the Pakistani state has weaponized Islamic doctrine to construct a vision of a homogenized, “purer, more Islamic state” that excludes and others those deemed incompatible with its vision of purity. This logic of purification is deeply gendered.

Food prices and food crises since 2020: evidence from Mali, northeast Nigeria, Sudan, and northern Uganda

open access: yesDisasters, Volume 50, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract When world prices of maize and wheat doubled between early 2020 and mid‐2022, it was feared the increases would transmit to markets in the Global South, threatening the food security of vulnerable people. We report studies conducted in Mali, northeast Nigeria, Sudan, and northern Uganda to examine changes in the prices of cereals, their ...
