Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and the Macular Pigment
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2001The predominant carotenoids of the macular pigment are lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. The regular distribution pattern of these carotenoids within the human macula indicates that their deposition is actively controlled in this tissue. The chemical, structural, and optical characteristics of these carotenoids are described.

The Reaction of Peroxynitrite with Zeaxanthin
Nitric Oxide, 1998The oxygenated carotenoids zeaxanthin and lutein, found in the macular area of the retina, may offer protection against or repair of oxidative damage associated with the degenerative diseases of aging. Since both superoxide and nitrogen monoxide, which react to form peroxynitrite, are found in the retina, we studied the reaction of peroxynitrite with ...

Zeaxanthin is bioavailable from genetically modified zeaxanthin-rich potatoes
European Journal of Nutrition, 2008The carotenoid zeaxanthin accumulates in the human macula lutea and protects retinal cells from blue light damage. However, zeaxanthin intake from food sources is low. Increasing zeaxanthin in common foods such as potatoes by traditional plant breeding or by genetic engineering could contribute to an increased intake of this carotenoid and ...

Zeaxanthin is one carotenoid molecule commonly found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, such as yellow corn, saffron, orange juice, honeydew, goji berry, paprika, spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, zucchini, and brussels sprout. It is the pigment that provides red, yellow, and orange colors to many plants and even can be found in animal products like ...

Lutein and zeaxanthin for macular degeneration
American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 2008The effects of increasing lutein and zeaxanthin dosages in people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are discussed.AMD is a disorder of the macula, the area associated with the sharpest visual acuity. AMD is classified as dry (nonneovascular) or wet (neovascular) and is associated with several risk factors, the biggest being age.

We investigated the membrane-stabilizing effect of three synthesized polar carotenoids, thermozeaxanthin (TZ), zeaxanthin glucoside (ZG) and zeaxanthin (Z), using the fluorescent calcein-leakage measurement from the calcein-entrapped liposomes composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC).
