Relational complexity influences analogical reasoning ability

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: Human language without analogy is like a zebra without stripes. The ability to understand analogies, or to engage in relational reasoning, has been argued to be an important distinction between the cognitive abilities of human and non-human ...

Zebras and Biting Flies: Quantitative Analysis of Reflected Light from Zebra Coats in Their Natural Habitat.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Experimental and comparative evidence suggests that the striped coats of zebras deter biting fly attack, but the mechanisms by which flies fail to target black-and-white mammals are still opaque.

Recognition and Reconstruction of Zebra Crossings on Roads from Mobile Laser Scanning Data

open access: yesISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information, 2016
Zebra crossings provide guidance and warning to pedestrians and drivers, thereby playing an important role in traffic safety management. Most previous studies have focused on detecting zebra stripes but have not provided full information about the areas,

Dynamics of the inner electron radiation belt: A review

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Physics, 2023
The Van Allen radiation belts are an extraordinary science discovery in the Earth magnetosphere and consist of two electron belts. The inner Van Allen belt contains electrons of 10s to 100s keV; the outer belt consists mainly of 0.1−10 MeV electrons ...

CX-ToM: Counterfactual explanations with theory-of-mind for enhancing human trust in image recognition models

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: We propose CX-ToM, short for counterfactual explanations with theory-of-mind, a new explainable AI (XAI) framework for explaining decisions made by a deep convolutional neural network (CNN).

Outliers Identification From Instantaneous Angular Speed Signal Generated by Zebra Tapes

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Instantaneous angular speed (IAS) measurement using zebra tape has been presented as an advantageous tool for rotating machinery surveillance. Unfortunately, both butt joint and mounting imperfection of the zebra tape result in stripes with different ...

Cardiac morphological and morphometric analysis of Ardea alba

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Ardea alba (Linnaeus, 1758) is a widely distributed heron species whose cardiovascular morphology remains poorly described. This study aimed to characterize the cardiac morphology and morphometry of adult A. alba. Ten specimens were analyzed using radiographic, morphometric, histological, scanning electron microscopy, and three‐dimensional ...

Scaling of Planar Sodium‐Nickel Chloride Battery Cells to 90 cm2 Active Area

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2025.
Large planar Na β′′ alumina electrolytes are prepared by tape‐casting and die‐pressing. These ceramic electrolytes are used to prepare planar sodium‐nickel chloride cells with 90 cm2 active area, providing a high capacity of 7 Ah. Successful cell cycling is demonstrated at 300 °C at rates up to C/4 (20 mA cm−2) for a cumulative capacity of 3.6 Ah cm−2.

Radial Transport in the Earth’s Radiation Belts: Linear, Quasi-linear, and Higher-order Processes

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2023
Observational studies of the Earth’s radiation belts indicate that Alfvénic fluctuations in the frequency range of 2–25 mHz accelerate electrons to relativistic energies.

Differential sensitivity to SHH signaling and neural crest‐mediated Gas1 expression regulate jaw size during development and evolution

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Developmental control of jaw size is crucial to prevent birth defects and facilitate evolutionary adaptation. We have shown that jaw size is established by neural crest mesenchyme (NCM), which are progenitor cells that migrate into the mandibular primordia and produce the jaws.
