This conceptual figure uses Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) to represent the hypothesized biological mechanism in which age and/or plumage traits affect reproductive success, and social interactions mediate these relationships. It highlights the predicted decomposition of (a) the total effect into the direct and indirect effects under scenarios of (b ...

Social context shapes acoustic signalling in the territorial damselfish Stegastes fuscus
Abstract Acoustic communication plays an important role in social interactions in reef fishes, but how signals vary with behavioural context remains poorly understood for many species. We characterised the acoustic repertoire of the Brazilian damselfish Stegastes fuscus using synchronised underwater audio–video recordings and tested how sound features ...

New World vultures are the only avian clade proposed to lack a syrinx and have been described as non‐vocal. Using dissection, diceCT, and histology, we demonstrate that cathartid vultures have novel syringeal features that form a syrinx and vocal characterization reveals that they produce more complex vocalizations than previously reported.

Motion dazzle and camouflage as distinct anti-predator defenses
Background Camouflage patterns that hinder detection and/or recognition by antagonists are widely studied in both human and animal contexts. Patterns of contrasting stripes that purportedly degrade an observer's ability to judge the speed and direction ...

ABSTRACT Causalists contend that you see a specific object (rather than a lookalike, or no object at all) because that object sits at the beginning of an appropriate causal chain that terminates in your visual experience. We argue that neither standard causalists nor their non‐causalist opponents can adequately accommodate a striking asymmetry between ...

Metal‐anode batteries using Li, Na, Mg, and Ca offer exceptionally high energy density, but dendrites, unstable interphases, cracking, and pore formation hinder durability and safety. This review shows how careful electrolyte and interphase design can stabilize these reactive metals.
