Squamous metaplasia of the rete ovarii in a Zebu cow [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2012
Stratified keratinizing squamous epithelium in the ovary has been associated with the diagnosis of ovarian teratoma in cows. Recently, the diagnosis of "epidermoid cyst" has been proposed. A case of squamous metaplasia of the rete ovarii in a Zebu cow is described in this report.A crossbreed Zebu cow had both ovaries enlarged with multiple cysts.

Cow Milk Risk Factors Associated With Bacterial Contaminations Along Dairy Value Chain in Lushoto and Handeni Districts, Tanzania

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 4, July 2026.
Milk and milk products are important sources of nutrients to human and animals, but due to its physicochemical characteristics and nutritional value, it serves as an excellent medium for growth of microorganisms. Most of smallholder dairy farmers have no training on livestock husbandry and milk handling practices.

Status of On‐Farm Artificial Insemination Services and Effectiveness of Oestrus Synchronization in Dairy Cattle Under Small‐Scale Dairy Farming System

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 4, July 2026.
Cross‐sectional survey and retrospective data on the oestrus synchronization were collected and analysed. The predominant mating system practiced by dairy farmers was AI (55.6%), and 73.5% of farmers apply controlled mating. The highest response rate and pregnancy rate were 89.5% and 45.2%, respectively, whereas a birth rate of 9.6%–18.5% was obtained.

Follicular dynamics in zebu cattle [PDF]

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira, 2000
The aim of this study was to investigate the follicular dynamics during estrous cycle in Gir breed (Bos indicus) cows. Follicular growth and atresia during estrous cycle were evaluated using a portable ultrasound device. Luteal activity was evaluated by serum progesterone levels.

Genetic Parameters of Methane Emission, Feed Efficiency, Feeding Behaviour, and Growth Traits in Beef Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 4, Page 496-507, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Climate change has intensified the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane (CH4) from enteric fermentation. Genetic selection has emerged as a promising mitigation strategy; however, studies on Bos taurus indicus, especially Nellore cattle, remain limited.

Energy metabolism and partition of lactating Zebu and crossbred Zebu cows in different planes of nutrition

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2018
The aim of this study was to determine the energy metabolism and partition of lactating Gyr and F1 Holstein x Gyr (F1 HxG) cows in different planes of nutrition. Six F1 HxG and six Gyr cows with 130 days in milking (DIM) fed corn silage and concentrate were evaluated.

ASIP Variants in Livestock: It's Not Black and White

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Fur and feather pigmentation play an important role in the survival and reproduction of many species, as well as in selective breeding and agriculture. The synthesis of pigment molecules, eumelanin and pheomelanin, is partially regulated by the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) encoded by the ASIP gene.

Effects of Shade and Concentrate Supplementation on Heat Tolerance, Metabolic, and Hematological Responses of Holstein Cows in a Semi‐Arid Environment

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 3, June 2026.
This study evaluated heat tolerance and biochemical and haematological responses of Holstein cows exposed to different environmental conditions (full sun or shade) and feeding regimens (with or without concentrate) in the semi‐arid region of Brazil. Sixteen adult cows were distributed across four treatments.

Deciphering the Evolution Pattern of Structural Variations Overlapped With Repetitive Sequence During Cattle Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 28, 18 May 2026.
The authors complement bovine pan‐SV with massive novel structural variations (SVs) identified through long‐read sequencing of 83 globally distributed cattle breeds. Repetitive sequence‐mediated SVs (rep‐SV) exhibit distinct dynamic patterns throughout cattle sub‐speciation and/or domestication processes, including uneven distribution between chr‐X and

Computed Tomography of the Nasal Cavities and Paranasal Sinuses of Cattle at Different Ages

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
Computed tomography (CT) provides a detailed, non‐invasive evaluation of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses in cattle. Age‐related changes include progressive enlargement of the sinuses and increasing ossification of the nasal turbinates. These findings highlight the importance of considering age when interpreting CT images in bovine diagnostics ...
