Occurrence and Public Health Implications of Brucella Abortus and Antimicrobial Residues in Raw Cow Milk in Bukombe District, Tanzania

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
Poor husbandry practices in Bukombe District accelerate diseases in livestock and indiscriminate uses of antimicrobials. Cow abortions, raw cow placenta and aborted fetuses feeding dogs, communal grazing and watering and introduction of new animals predict brucellosis in the herd.

Handmade Biopsy for Genotyping of In Vitro‐Produced Bovine Embryos

open access: yesAnatomia, Histologia, Embryologia, Volume 55, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Blastocyst biopsy allows genomic selection of pre‐implantation bovine embryos, reducing generation interval and enhancing the genetic gain. We aimed to evaluate the suitability of a simple biopsy procedure, performed by hands, using a splitting microblade and a stereoscope, on in vitro‐produced embryos. Crossbred Bos taurus x B.

Morphological assessment of the Zebu Bororo (Wodaabé) cattle of Niger in the West African zebu framework [PDF]

open access: yesArchives Animal Breeding, 2017
Abstract. A total of 357 adult cows and 29 sires belonging to the long-horned Niger Zebu Bororo cattle population were assessed for 13 body measurements and 11 qualitative traits. Data were jointly analysed with 311 cows and 64 sires belonging to other four West African zebu cattle populations, sampled in Burkina Faso and Benin, representative of both ...

Stayability in the Era of Early‐Challenged Females: Genetic Parameters and Correlations With Economically Relevant Traits

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 3, Page 422-430, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to estimate the variance components, heritabilities and genetic correlations between four new different categories of stayability (STAY48‐2, STAY48‐3, STAY54‐2, STAY54‐3) with weight at 240 days of age (W240), weight at 450 days of age (W450), scrotal circumference at 365 days of age (SC365), age at puberty in males (APM ...

Genetic Parameters for Novel Feedlot Profitability‐Related Traits in Nelore Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 3, Page 411-421, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for accumulated profitability (AFP) and profit per kilogram of liveweight gain (PFT), and their relationships with weight at 450 days of age (W450), scrotal circumference at 365 days of age (SC365), age at first calving (AFC), probability of precocious calving at 30 ...

Impact of Model Parameterisation and Variance Component Estimates on Genomic Predictions of Carcass Traits in Montana Composite Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 3, Page 431-442, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of variance component (VC) estimates, obtained from different models and two relationship matrices, pedigree‐based (BLUP) and genomic information‐based (ssGBLUP), on genomic predictions of carcass traits in Montana composite cattle.

Genomic Prediction Ability Using Linear and Threshold Approaches for Different Stayability Definitions in Nellore Females

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 143, Issue 3, Page 457-464, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Enhancing female longevity through regular calvings improves herd replacement rates and reduces the costs associated with replacing low reproductive efficiency animals. Stayability (STAY), defined as a cow's ability to remain productive in the herd, is a categorical trait that challenges traditional genetic evaluation due to its non‐normal ...

Knowledge mapping of risk mitigation measures against vector‐borne diseases

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract A comprehensive synthesis of current evidence on surveillance, prevention and control measures for 25 selected vector‐borne diseases (VBDs) affecting animals in the EU is presented here. The assessment integrates evidence from systematic literature reviews, modelling studies, field investigations and expert judgement.

Milk yield of Simmental × Zebu and Brown Swiss × Zebu cows in tropical climate.

open access: yes, 2015

Bos indicus, the zebu

open access: yes, 2008
Zebus or humped cattle are the typical cattle of the South Asian subcontinent. At present, there are thirty or more zebu breeds in India. The recognized breeds differ mainly in the shape and firmness of the hump, horn size, ranging from long-horned to very short-horned or even almost rudimentary horns, and horn shape, ranging from lyre-shaped through ...
