ASIP Variants in Livestock: It's Not Black and White

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Fur and feather pigmentation play an important role in the survival and reproduction of many species, as well as in selective breeding and agriculture. The synthesis of pigment molecules, eumelanin and pheomelanin, is partially regulated by the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) encoded by the ASIP gene.

Effects of Shade and Concentrate Supplementation on Heat Tolerance, Metabolic, and Hematological Responses of Holstein Cows in a Semi‐Arid Environment

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 3, June 2026.
This study evaluated heat tolerance and biochemical and haematological responses of Holstein cows exposed to different environmental conditions (full sun or shade) and feeding regimens (with or without concentrate) in the semi‐arid region of Brazil. Sixteen adult cows were distributed across four treatments.

Genetic diversity, introgression and relationships among West/Central African cattle breeds

open access: yesGenetics Selection Evolution, 2004
Genetic diversity, introgression and relationships were studied in 521 individuals from 9 African Bos indicus and 3 Bos taurus cattle breeds in Cameroon and Nigeria using genotype information on 28 markers (16 microsatellite, 7 milk protein and 5 blood ...

Phenotypic Characterization Of The Zebu Cattle In Tajikistan

open access: yes, 2018
This article deals with the genetic characteristics of samples Schwyz-zebu cattle from three farms of the Republic of Tajikistan on 10 microsatellite markers (STS). Hence, the present study was carried out to evaluate the heterozygosity in the population and to characterize this breed by identifying DNA markers using microstatellites.

A recessive lethal chondrodysplasia in a miniature zebu family results from an insertion affecting the chondroitin sulfat domain of aggrecan

open access: yesBMC Genetics, 2018
Background Congenital skeletal malformations represent a heterogeneous group of disorders affecting bone and cartilage development. In cattle, particular chondrodysplastic forms have been identified in several miniature breeds.

Estimation of taurindicine hybridization of American Zebu cattle in Brazil

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Research, 2012
Our objective was to estimate Bos primigenius taurus introgression in American Zebu cattle. One hundred and four American Zebu (Nellore) cattle were submitted to mtDNA, microsatellite and satellite analysis. Twenty-three alleles were detected in microsatellite analysis, averaging 4.6 ± 1.82/locus.

Genetic parameters for stayability to consecutive calvings in Zebu cattle

open access: yesAnimal, 2018
Longer-lived cows tend to be more profitable and the stayability trait is a selection criterion correlated to longevity. An alternative to the traditional approach to evaluate stayability is its definition based on consecutive calvings, whose main advantage is the more accurate evaluation of young bulls.

Is the American Zebu really Bos indicus?

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 1999
The American continent was colonized in the 16th century by Europeans who first introduced cattle of Bos taurus origin. Accounts register introduction of Bos indicus cattle into South America in the 19th and continuing through the 20th century, and most ...
