Notes on the ziehl-neelsen staining of sputum
Tubercle, 1974Abstract When the incidence of tuberculosis is low, it is possible to save time and labour by making films of concentrates of sputum prepared for culture, 8 per double slide. Each positive is checked by a repeat film on the remainder of the original specimen. A tilting rack is described which makes staining easier and more efficient.

Bulk staining of sputum by the Ziehl-Neelsen method
Tubercle, 1984A trial of the Ziehl-Neelsen staining method employing bulk decolorization, rinsing and counter staining yielded reliable results. Of 110 patients who proved to be positive by direct microscopy, cross-contamination could not be proved in any. The advantage of the mass method is its economy.

A modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain for mycobacteria.
Medical laboratory sciences, 1993For the preliminary detection of mycobacteria in routine pathology specimens heavy reliance is placed on staining methods. Difficulties encountered with a cold-staining method, which had possibly gone un-noticed for several years despite a quality control check programme, are described. An alternative to the 'classical' Ziehl-Neelsen stain is described,
