Plastic ingestion by two cetacean groups: Ziphiidae and Delphinidae
Environmental Pollution, 2023The presence of plastic in our environment is having a massive impact on today's marine biota. Whales and dolphins are becoming sentinels of litter pollution as plastic entanglement and ingestion affect them with unknown consequences. Although information exists about this anthropogenic interaction, the compilation of this data on metastudies is ...

Stomach anatomy and use in defining systemic relationships of the cetacean family ziphiidae (beaked whales) [PDF]
AbstractMembers of the Cetacean family Ziphiidae (Beaked whales) exhibit surprising diversity in stomach anatomy, particularly in the number of connecting chambers between the main and pyloric stomachs. Sixty‐one stomachs of five beaked whale species were examined, including Berardius, Hyperoodon, Mesoplodon, Tasmacetus, and Ziphius.

A Comprehensive and Validated Molecular Taxonomy of Beaked Whales, Family Ziphiidae [PDF]
DNA sequences from orthologous loci can provide universal characters for taxonomic identification. Molecular taxonomy is of particular value for groups in which distinctive morphological features are difficult to observe or compare. To assist in species identification for the little known family Ziphiidae (beaked whales), we compiled a reference ...

Molecular genetic identification of southern hemisphere beaked whales (Cetacea: Ziphiidae)
Molecular Ecology, 1998To assist in the species‐level identification of stranded and hunted beaked whales, we compiled a database of ‘reference’ sequences from the mitochondrial DNA control region for 15 of the 20 described ziphiid species. Reference samples for eight species were obtained from stranded animals in New Zealand and South Australia.

A new beaked whale (Odontoceti, Ziphiidae) from the middle Miocene of Peru
Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, 2009ABSTRACT On the basis of a partial odontocete (toothed whale) skeleton (complete skull with associated ear bones, mandible, teeth, hyoid bones, and cervical vertebrae) from the middle Miocene (ca. 14–12 Ma) levels of the Pisco Formation at Cerro los Quesos, Pisco-Ica desert, southern coast of Peru, a new genus and species of beaked whale (Ziphiidae ...
