Histological behaviour of zirconia implants: An experiment in rats
Annals of Anatomy - Anatomischer Anzeiger, 2012New biomaterials including surface modifications should undergo in vitro and in vivo evaluation before clinical trials. The objective of our in vivo study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of one of the newly fabricated zirconia implant surfaces, called "mds".

The Implant‐Abutment Interface of Alumina and Zirconia Abutments
Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, 2008ABSTRACTBackground: Although ceramic and titanium abutments are widely used in clinical practice, the mechanical characterization of the implant‐abutment interface for ceramic abutments has not been evaluated after the dynamic loading.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the implant‐abutment interface after the dynamic loading of titanium ...

Zirconia Dental Implant Materials
Materials Science Forum, 2017Ceramic materials are used for the fabrication of dental restorations respectively esthetic dentistry. The main ceramic materials are glass ceramics, spinel, alumina and zirconia. Zirconia was introduced into dentistry domain in the 1990s used like frameworks, implants, dowels, abutments and orthodontic brackets.

Osseointegration and Biocompatibility of Zirconia Implants
2021For over three decades, zirconia ceramics have been used in orthopaedic surgery, and they were just recently brought into dentistry as a metal substitute for crown and bridge construction, as well as implant abutments. Both osseointegrative and biocompatibility characteristics of zirconium dioxide have been demonstrated in experiments.

Discoloration of the Peri-implant Mucosa Caused by Zirconia and Titanium Implants
The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, 2016The aim of the present study was to assess the discoloration of the peri-implant mucosa caused by zirconia (Zr) and titanium (Ti) dental implants with and without soft tissue grafting (STG). Zr and Ti implants were inserted in edentulous areas in pig maxillae.

An Overview of Immediate Root Analogue Zirconia Implants
Journal of Oral Implantology, 2013Owing to its excellent biomechanical characteristics, biocompatibility, and bright tooth-like color, zirconia has the potential to become a substitute for titanium as dental implant material and to be successfully used as root-analogue implants by reproducing the contours of the extracted tooth.

Zirconia for teeth and implants
2008This case series reports on the use of nonsilica-based high-strength full ceramics for different prosthetic indications. Fifty-two consecutive patients received tooth- or implant-supported zirconia reconstructions during a 2-year period. The observation period for reexamination was 12 to 30 months.

Translational research on clinically failed zirconia implants
Dental Materials, 2019To provide fractographic analysis of clinically fractured zirconia implants recovered with their cemented crown. To calculate bending moments, corresponding stress and crack onset location on the implant's fracture surface using a mathematical model integrating spatial coordinates of the crown-implant part and occlusal loading obtained from 2D and 3D ...

A new testing protocol for zirconia dental implants
Dental Materials, 2015Based on the current lack of standards concerning zirconia dental implants, we aim at developing a protocol to validate their functionality and safety prior their clinical use. The protocol is designed to account for the specific brittle nature of ceramics and the specific behavior of zirconia in terms of phase transformation.Several types of zirconia ...
