The effect of impurity niobium on diffusion of self-interstitial atom and self-diffusion by interstitial mechanism in zirconium: an atomistic simulation

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
The effect of niobium on diffusion of self-interstitial atom and self-diffusion by interstitial mechanism has been simulated by the molecular dynamics method in zirconium at a temperature up to 1000 K.

PREPARATION OF ZIRCONIUM FROM ZIRCONIUM TETRAFLUORIDE

open access: yes, 1957
Increased interest in zirconium as a material of construction has resulted in numerous attempts to develop more economical processes for its production. Currently the Kroll Process, which reduces zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium, is used. A process developed at the Ames Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission involves the bomb reduction of ...

W‐Based Thin Film Metallic Glasses Doped with Ni, Zr, and B for Industrial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work is the first to deal with a comprehensive comparison of two metallic glass systems, W–Zr–B and W–Ni–B, in terms of their suitability for specific industrial applications. Their mechanical and tribological properties are compared and discussed in combination with structural homogeneity on different types of technically relevant substrates and ...

EXAFS Study of Zirconium Monobutylphosphate and Zirconium Dibutylphosphate [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 1990
EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) measurement was carried out for the study of the local structure around Zr in precipitates of Zr (IV) -monobutylphosphate and Zr (IV)-dibutylphosphate, which are one of the main species of so-called “The Third Phase”.

CALPHAD‐Guided Prediction and Interpretation of Phase Formation in Ta–Mo–Cr–Ti–Al Refractory High‐Entropy Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study designs Ta–Mo–Cr–Ti–Al refractory high‐entropy alloys with a disordered body‐centered‐cubic A2 crystal structure aiming for improved ductility, lower density, and oxidation resistance. Four alloy compositions are identified by thermodynamic calculations.

Point defects and grain boundary effects on tensile strength of 3C-SiC studied by molecular dynamics simulations

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2019
The tensile strength of irradiated 3C-SiC, SiC with artificial point defects, SiC with symmetric tilt grain boundaries (GBs), irradiated SiC with GBs are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K.

Impact of Hot Isostatic Pressing on Microstructure Evolution and Creep Performance of Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam Processed CM247LC

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) temperature on the microstructure and creep performance of powder bed fusion–laser beam processed CM247LC superalloy is investigated. Grain growth and γ’ precipitate evolution are characterized following HIP at varying temperatures.

Two-dimensional vacancy platelets as precursors for basal dislocation loops in hexagonal zirconium

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Zirconium alloys are widely used structural materials of choice in the nuclear industry due to their exceptional radiation and corrosion resistance. However long-time exposure to irradiation eventually results in undesirable shape changes, irradiation ...

Study of the Effect of Process Parameters and Heat Treatment on the Formation and Evolution of Directed Energy Deposition of IN718‐CuCrZr Interface

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bimetallic structures of Inconel 718 and CuCrZr are fabricated using the laser powder directed energy deposition method. The study reveals a strong dependence of interface characteristics such as width and interfusion on processing and heat treatment strategies.
