The local carbon environment in the refractory transition metal carbides ZrC, HfC, NbC, and TaC was studied using high‐resolution magic angle spinning 13C NMR spectroscopy. Results show that carbon nuclei with next nearest neighbor vacant sites or oxygen/nitrogen impurities are distinguishable through 13C NMR, and that the technique can be used to ...

Oxidation resistance of zirconium diboride powder.
The oxidation resistance of zirconium diboride (ZrB2) powder at high temperatures was investigated in order to determine the possibility of the use of additional material for improvement of the oxidation resistance in carbon-carbon (C/C) composites. ZrB2 powder with an average particle size of about 10μm was used in this experiment.

Abstract Novel compositionally complex borides, (Hf,Zr,Nb,Ti)B2 and (Hf,Zr,Nb,Ti)B2‒LaB6, were fabricated using spark plasma sintering process. (Hf,Zr,Nb,Ti)B2‒LaB6 exhibits a dual‐phase microstructure, in which (Hf,Zr,Nb,Ti)B2 is a primary phase with the hexagonal structure and LaB6 is a secondary phase with a cubic structure.
