Legacy effects of redlining on the distribution of greenspaces in US cities

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, EarlyView.
We investigated how a discriminatory housing policy—redlining—has shaped the spatial patterns and configurations of greenspaces throughout 177 cities in the contiguous US. Housing segregation has been a long‐term development practice that has sequestered communities of color to areas with elevated environmental and public health risks.

Case Report: Clinical and pathological features of a metastasizing malignant mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney in a Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
We describe a case of mixed epithelial and stromal tumor (MEST) of the kidney with widespread metastases in an eight-year-old male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) from the ZOO Ljubljana. The tiger presented with hematuria, and after unsuccessful

Adaptive Immunity in Marsupials

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, EarlyView.
Comparison of the marsupial and eutherian adaptive immune systems. ABSTRACT Marsupials diverged from eutherian mammals 125–160 million years ago. Although evolutionarily distinct, both groups of mammals can produce complex adaptive immune responses to antigens with several key differences.

Effect of age class on the survivorship and spatial movement patterns of headstarted Texas horned lizards soft‐released into an urban population

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
When compared to resident lizards of the corresponding age class, juvenile headstarted Texas horned lizards soft‐released into an urban population exhibited more favorable responses to short‐term translocation objectives (i.e., daily movement rates, home range sizes, and survival rates) than did conspecifics headstarted to the adult age class ...

Outbreak and genotyping of canine distemper virus in captive Siberian tigers and red pandas

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
In this study, four canine distemper virus (CDV) strains were isolated from captive Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) and red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) during two separate CDV outbreaks in a zoo in Guangdong province, China. Sequence alignment and

Effects of oiling common raven nests on ravens and greater sage‐grouse in sagebrush ecosystems

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We oiled and sham‐oiled raven nests across 7 sites in the Great Basin to measure the effects of egg‐oiling on co‐occurring populations of ravens and sage‐grouse. Oiling raven eggs ended embryonic development of oiled eggs, reduced raven densities, resulted in more than a doubling of nest‐survival probabilities of sage‐grouse nests, and spurred ...

Individual variation and repeatability of the behavioral response to novel objects in captive African elephants (Loxodonta africana)

open access: yesDiscover Animals
Individuals differ consistently in their behavioral responses to novel situations. In zoo animals, such evidence can help to design enrichment programs to improve individual welfare, an area of increasing efforts in the zoo community.

Sodium sulfite can reliably induce chemical hypoxia without toxic effects in the model sea anemone species, Exaiptasia diaphana

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Climate change is accelerating the deoxygenation of aquatic ecosystems, so understanding its effects on biological processes is increasingly critical. An emerging method for inducing hypoxia during experimentation utilizes sodium sulfite (SSI) to scavenge oxygen; however, it remains unclear if hypoxia‐inducing concentrations of SSI are toxic ...

Epidemiology of leptospirosis at Sorocaba Zoo, São Paulo state, Southeastern Brazil

open access: yesPesquisa Veterinária Brasileira, 2012
Leptospirosis is considered a worldwide distributed zoonosis, caused by the bacteria Leptospira spp. Since several species of wildlife animals are reportedly reservoirs, the aim of the present study was to know the epidemiology of leptospirosis at the ...
