Inhibitory effects of macrotetrolides from Streptomyces spp. on zoosporogenesis and motility of peronosporomycete zoospores are likely linked with enhanced ATPase activity in mitochondria [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
The release of zoospores from sporangia and motility of the released zoospores are critical in the disease cycle of the Peronosporomycetes that cause devastating diseases in plants, fishes, animals and humans.

Zoospore diversity and sexual reproduction in the lichen-forming genus Trebouxia: From neglected evidence to new facts. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Biol (Stuttg)
This study clarifies the role of flagellate cells in four Trebouxia species. Using innovative techniques, we could distinguish between zoospores and gametes, providing the first detailed evidence of sex. Abstract Trebouxia is one of the most frequent genera of green microalgae that occur as photobionts in lichens.

Insights into the Utility of the Focal Adhesion Scaffolding Proteins in the Anaerobic Fungus Orpinomyces sp. C1A. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Focal adhesions (FAs) are large eukaryotic multiprotein complexes that are present in all metazoan cells and function as stable sites of tight adhesion between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cell's cytoskeleton.

2,4-Diacetylphloroglucinol suppresses zoosporogenesis and impairs motility of Peronosporomycete zoospores [PDF]

open access: yesWorld Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2011
2,4-Diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens, shows toxicity to many microorganisms including fungi, bacteria, and peronosporomycetes. Zoosporogenesis and motility of zoospores are critical for a complete disease cycle and pathogenicity of the peronosporomycete phytopathogens.

Ultrastructure of Zoosporogenesis in Allomyces macrogynus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1974
The formation of zoospores in the aquatic Phycomycete, Allomyces macrogynus, has been studied with the electron microscope. Flagellum formation, zoospore-membrane formation and nuclear-cap formation comprise the sequence of major events that occur within a zoosporangium upon the addition of water to a culture of the organism growing on an agar surface.

Inhibition of broomrape germination by 2,4‐diacetylphloroglucinol produced by environmental Pseudomonas

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 16, Issue 12, Page 2313-2325, December 2023., 2023
The present work expands our knowledge about the role that DAPG‐producing Pseudomonas play as natural bioherbicides to ward off parasitic plant infections, which are responsible for important yield losses in crops. Abstract Parasitic weeds such as broomrapes (Phelipanche ramosa and Orobanche cumana) cause severe damage to crops and their development ...

The underexplored potential of green macroalgae in aquaculture

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 14, Issue 1, Page 5-26, January 2022., 2022
Abstract Green macroalgae (Chlorophyta) currently represent a residual fraction (<1%) of global seaweed biomass production landings. In turn, red (Rhodophyta) and brown (Ochrophyta) macroalgae dominate the remaining percentage of aquaculture production, exceeding 32 million tonnes per annum.

Influence of temperature on in vitro zoosporogenesis of Pythium insidiosum [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Mycology, 2017
This study verified the influence of different temperatures on P. insidiosum in vitro zoosporogenesis. P. insidiosum isolates (n = 26) were submitted to zoosporogenesis and incubated at 5°C, 15°C, 20°C and 37°C (1st stage). Grass fragments were evaluated under optical microscopy at 4, 8, and 24 hours of incubation.

Host and pathogen autophagy are central to the inducible local defences and systemic response of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera against the oomycete pathogen Anisolpidium ectocarpii

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 226, Issue 5, Page 1445-1460, June 2020., 2020
Summary Kelps are key primary producers of cold and temperate marine coastal ecosystems and exhibit systemic defences against pathogens. Yet, the cellular mechanisms underpinning their immunity remain to be elucidated. We investigated the time course of infection of the kelp Macrocystis pyrifera by the oomycete Anisolpidium ectocarpii using TEM, in ...

Medicinal plant extracts and protein kinase C inhibitor suppress zoosporogenesis and impair motility of Phytophthora capsici zoospores

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2016
The effects of water and acetone extracts from 100 medicinal plants growing in Bangladesh, along with a selective inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), chelerythrine chloride, were tested on zoosporogenesis (release of zoospores from the sporangia) and ...
