Species traits to guide moth conservation in anthropogenic regions: A multi‐species approach using distribution trends in Flanders (northern Belgium)

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 17, Issue 6, Page 1016-1032, November 2024.
By applying Multi‐Species Change Indices to over 1.8 million citizen scientist observations from 1980 to 2022, we assessed the distributional changes of macro‐moths in Flanders (northern Belgium)—a highly anthropogenic region in Northwest Europe—by linking temporal trends to 10 key ecological and life history traits.

Influencia de la gestión de los bosques y las zonas de pastos en la diversidad y conservación de las mariposas diurnas y zygenas (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea, Hesperiidae, Zygaenidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The distribution of butterflies and burnet moths was investigated at 38 patches in the Oettinger Forst (Bavaria, Germany) in 2001. Forty–two butterfly and four burnet moth species were recorded. They were unequally distributed over the study area.

First comprehensive higher level phylogeny of Zygaenidae (Lepidoptera) including estimated ages of the major lineages and a review of known zygaenid fossils

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 610-623, October 2024.
Using 30 gene fragments and sampling nearly 50% of the genera, we provide a well‐resolved phylogeny of Zygaenidae; Zygaenidae are recovered as monophyletic as are most of the subfamilies. The lineage leading to the extant Zygaenidae diverged in Late Cretaceous, while the divergence among the subfamilies occurred a little before the Cretaceous–Paleogene

Traffic intensity and vegetation management affect flower‐visiting insects and their response to resources in road verges

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 8, Page 1955-1967, August 2024.
Road verges can play a valuable role for the conservation of wild bees and butterflies, but there is a need to consider both traffic intensity and resource availability when implementing management strategies. To support wild bee and butterfly diversity, we recommend actions to enhance plant species richness and flower resource availability, and to ...

Adapting to change: Exploring the consequences of climate‐induced host plant shifts in two specialist Lepidoptera species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
Our study is the first to our knowledge exploring consequences for specialised low‐elevation insect herbivores facing novel, congeneric, high‐elevation plants. Importantly, our study highlights that considering altered biotic interactions, such as those between specialised insects and their host plants, is crucial to predict how species will respond to

The anti-bat strategy of ultrasound absorption: the wings of nocturnal moths (Bombycoidea: Saturniidae) absorb more ultrasound than the wings of diurnal moths (Chalcosiinae: Zygaenoidea: Zygaenidae)

open access: yesBiology Open, 2017
The selection pressure from echolocating bats has driven the development of a diverse range of anti-bat strategies in insects. For instance, several studies have proposed that the wings of some moths absorb a large portion of the sound energy contained ...

A contribution to the knowledge of family Chalcididae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) in Iran [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In the course of this study, the number of recorded chalcidids (Hym.: Chalcididae) from Iran increased to 42 species (including one unidentified species of the genus Lasiochalcidia Masi), of which fifteen species and four genera are new to Iranian ...
