An alpha-amylase encoding gene from the extremely thermophilic Archaea Thermococcus hydrothermalis was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The encoded alpha-amylase possesses molecular characteristics specific to the Archaea, especially from Pyrococcus species, with biochemical characteristics of the alpha-amylases from Thermococcus.
