Novel approaches for drug development against chronic primary pain: A systematic review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic primary pain (CPP) persisting for more than 3 months, associated with significant emotional distress without any known underlying cause, is an unmet medical need. Traditional or adjuvant analgesics do not provide satisfactory pain relief for a great proportion of these patients.

Naltrexone Protects Against Hypotension, Hyperthermia, and β-Endorphin Overproduction During Heatstroke in the Rat

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2005
Heat stroke is characterized by hyperthermia, arterial hypotension, decreased baroreflex sensitivity, and increased serum levels of β-endorphin. Whereas naltrexone may have therapeutic potential in heat stroke, the underlying mechanism remains unclear ...

In silico prediction of novel effective combinational treatment of chronic pain in individual patients: A joint white paper of the H2020 QSPainRelief consortium

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Opioids are prescribed widely for chronic pain despite well‐recognised risks and variable long‐term benefit, reflecting the lack of effective alternatives for many patients. Combination therapies offer a promising strategy to enhance efficacy whilst reducing side effects.

Peripheral non-viral MIDGE vector-driven delivery of β-endorphin in inflammatory pain

open access: yesMolecular Pain, 2009
Background Leukocytes infiltrating inflamed tissue produce and release opioid peptides such as β-endorphin, which activate opioid receptors on peripheral terminals of sensory nerves resulting in analgesia.

Heme-Induced Macrophage Phenotype Switching and Impaired Endogenous Opioid Homeostasis Correlate with Chronic Widespread Pain in HIV

open access: yesCells, 2023
Chronic widespread pain (CWP) is associated with a high rate of disability and decreased quality of life in people with HIV-1 (PWH). We previously showed that PWH with CWP have increased hemolysis and elevated plasma levels of cell-free heme, which ...

ACTH suppression and adverse effects of cabergoline in horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Background The diagnosis and management of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in horses includes evaluating abnormal plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH). Treatment commonly includes the oral dopamine agonist pergolide mesylate, which suppresses the pathologic overproduction of ACTH.

Cannabinoid CB2 Receptors Contribute to Upregulation of β-endorphin in Inflamed Skin Tissues by Electroacupuncture

open access: yesMolecular Pain, 2011
Background Electroacupuncture (EA) can produce analgesia by increasing the β-endorphin level and activation of peripheral μ-opioid receptors in inflamed tissues.
