Role of anti-β-glucan antibody in host defense against fungi [PDF]
We have recently detected an anti-beta-glucan antibody in normal human and normal mouse sera. The anti-beta-glucan antibody showed reactivity to pathogenic fungal Aspergillus and Candida cell wall glucan. Anti-beta-glucan antibody could bind whole Candida cells. It also enhanced the candidacidal activity of macrophages in vitro.

β-Glucan Induces Training Immunity to Promote Antiviral Activity by Activating TBK1
Many studies have shown that β-glucan induces a trained immune phenotype in innate immune cells to defend against bacterial and fungal infections. The specific mechanism involves cellular metabolism and epigenetic reprogramming.

Isolation and characterization of periplasmic cyclic β-glucans ofAzorhizobium caulinodans [PDF]
Oligoglucose molecules isolated from Azorhizobium caulinodans were characterized by compositional analysis, Smith degradation, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and (1)H and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. A.

The fungal cell wall serves as the interface between the organism and its environment. Complex carbohydrates are a major component of the Candida albicans cell wall, i.e., glucan, mannan and chitin.

Congo red inhibits in vitro β-glucan synthases of Saprolegnia [PDF]
1,3-β- and 1,4-β-glucan synthases from Saprolegnia were inhibited in vitro by Congo red. This dye was found to be a non competitive inhibitor which prevented initiation and elongation of polymer chains.

Association of immunological disorders in lethal side effect of NSAIDs on β-glucan-administered mice [PDF]
(1-->3)-beta-D-Glucan (beta-glucan) is a biological response modifier that regulates host immune response. We have found that the combination of a beta-glucan and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), indomethacin (IND), induced lethal toxicity in mice [Yoshioka et al. (1998) FEMS Immunol. Med. Microbiol., 21, 171-179].

Gradual solubilization ofCandidacell wall β-glucan by oxidative degradation in mice [PDF]
Candida spp. is a medically important fungi which induces disseminated candidiasis and candidemia in hospitalized immunocompromised patients. The cell wall of Candida is mainly composed of two polysaccharides, mannan and beta-glucan, and at least part of beta-glucan is basically insoluble in H2O or NaOH. We became interested in when and how particulate

A genome wide association scan for (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan content in the grain of contemporary 2-row Spring and Winter barleys [PDF]
Background: (1,3;1,4)-β-Glucan is an important component of the cell walls of barley grain as it affects processability during the production of alcoholic beverages and has significant human health benefits when consumed aboverecommended threshold levels.

Protective effect of β-glucan against systemicStreptococcus pneumoniaeinfection in mice [PDF]
The antimicrobial effect of soluble beta-1,3-D-glucan from Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (SSG) was examined in mice experimentally infected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 4 and 6B. SSG was administered i.p. either 3 days before challenge or 3-48 h after challenge.
