Antioxidant activity, β-glucan and lipid contents of oat varieties

open access: yesCzech Journal of Food Sciences, 2008
The antioxidant activity, total phenolic and β-glucans contents, and the fatty acid profile of total lipids in covered (black and yellow) and naked oats were studied.

Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) regulates mesenchymal stem cells through let-7f microRNA and Wnt/β-catenin signaling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1) is a matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-independent regulator of growth and apoptosis in various cell types.

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Study of LGB gene polymorphisms of small ruminants reared in Eastern Europe

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2018
The objectives of the current research were: (i) to determine the allele and genotype frequencies of the LGB gene in the sheep and goat breeds reared in Eastern Europe; (ii) to implement a comparative study in order to evaluate the milk production ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Sestavení kompetitivní enzymové imunoanalýzy pro stanovení α-laktalbuminu a β-laktoglobulinů kravského mléka

open access: yesCzech Journal of Food Sciences, 1999
Polyclonal antibodies were raised against three immunogens- a-lactalbumin (LA), -lactoglobulin A (LGA) and B (LGB). Using these antibodies the procedures of an indirect competitive enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) were constructed, optimized a nd characterized

Replication confers β cell immaturity. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Pancreatic β cells are highly specialized to regulate systemic glucose levels by secreting insulin. In adults, increase in β-cell mass is limited due to brakes on cell replication.

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Determination of water-insoluble β-D-glucan in the whole-grain cereals and pseudocereals

open access: yesCzech Journal of Food Sciences, 2007
Water-insoluble β-(1,3)-D-glucan (lichenan) was determined in 43 samples of various cereal (oats, barley, wheat, millet) and pseudocereal (buckwheat, amaranth) cultivars using a modified procedure with fungal α-amylase (Fermizyme P 300).

The Caenorhabditis elegans DPF‐3 and human DPP4 have tripeptidyl peptidase activity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) family comprises serine proteases classically defined by their ability to remove dipeptides from the N‐termini of substrates, a feature that gave the family its name. Here, we report the discovery of a previously unrecognized tripeptidyl peptidase activity in DPPIV family members from two different species.
