A Case Report on Rehabilitation of the Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) in the Wild

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Asiatic black bears in Russia face conservation threats such as habitat destruction and fragmentation, which exacerbate food shortages caused by crop failures. This study explores an innovative approach to rehabilitating bears that abandon hibernation in mid‐winter due to extreme exhaustion by providing supplemental food near their den sites.

Perceived Risks and Agency Trust Associated With Chronic Wasting Disease Over Time

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
We examined changes in perceived risks associated with chronic wasting disease (CWD) and perceived trust in wildlife agencies over time across 10 studies in eight states. Results indicated that perceived risks to both deer and humans declined the longer the disease had been in a state. Results also indicated that agency trust evaluations were positive,

Individual Variation in Overwintering Strategies of the Great Evening Bat (Ia io) in Subtropical China

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Tracking with GPS and accelerometers shows that great evening bats in subtropical China use two overwintering strategies: some remain in continuous hibernation, while others switch between torpor and activity as temperatures change. This behavioral flexibility, shaped by climate, underscores the importance of protecting diverse roosting habitats for ...

From pollen provision to pollinator: Species‐specific sterol assimilation by wild bees in urban landscapes

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Human‐driven landscape change, particularly urbanization, is reshaping pollinator communities, yet the functional traits that mediate species persistence remain poorly understood. Dietary specialization is commonly used to predict species vulnerability.

Anthropogenic nitrogen addition interrupts seasonal connectivity and structures of plant–pollinator networks

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecological communities are stressed by rapid and complex anthropogenic changes, threatening the persistence of biotic interactions and ecosystem functioning. Plant–pollinator communities, for instance, undergo structural transformations as a result of land‐use change ...

Flexible parental care in a songbird correlates with sex‐specific responses to seasonal phenology, mating opportunity and reproductive success

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This population‐comparative study reveals that male and female parents respond differently to social and ecological conditions. This sex‐specific responsive strategy is related to the incongruent parental care systems across populations in Chinese penduline tits.

open access: yes, 1998
Aureobasidium spp ...

China's Strategic Approach to Tech Diplomacy in a Time of Global Uncertainty

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the wake of U.S.‐China technological competition and the COVID‐19 pandemic, “tech diplomacy” has gained prominence in Chinese political and academic discourse. When and why to give shorebirds a head start

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Headstarting is a translocation technique involving the hatching or rearing of wild eggs or young in captivity and the release of those individuals back to the wild at or before independence. It has been trialed as a conservation intervention for shorebirds over recent decades to improve the population trend of target populations by increasing
