Gestational diabetes mellitus in the COVID-19 pandemic: A retrospective study from Hangzhou, China. [PDF]
Highlights The COVID‐19 pandemic affected nonpregnant women who had oral glucose tolerance tests in outpatient clinics more than pregnant women. After the COVID‐19 pandemic, the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increased at the height of the epidemic, but the overall prevalence of GDM decreased yearly from 2019 to 2021.

Highlights In the first trimester, the plasma mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was higher in women who developed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) than in women who did not develop GDM during their pregnancy. The increased levels of plasma mtDNA were independent of age and fasting plasma glucose levels in the first trimester.

HighlightsPrepregnancy BMI status was associated with the abnormal fetal growth, and GDM partially mediated the relationship between prepregnancy BMI and LGA. Thus, a focus on screening and management of prepregnancy obesity and GDM can limit the future epidemic of infant obesity.
