Insights from three decades of IUCN Red List assessments catalyzing shark, ray, and chimaera conservation

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species is a critical measure of global aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity status. It is also the basis for the Red List Index, which tracks extinction risk over time.

ZmDLR9 is required for lateral root development via pre‐rRNA processing in maize

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 128, Issue 1, October 2026.
SUMMARY Pumilio (PUM) proteins comprise an evolutionarily conserved family of sequence‐specific RNA‐binding proteins that act as key post‐transcriptional regulators in eukaryotes. In this study, we identified a maize PUM protein, named ZmDLR9 (Defective in Lateral Root 9), as a positive factor involved in lateral root development.

The MdVQ22‐MdWRKY33d complex regulates MdPER55 and MdDREB1D expression to modulate apple salt tolerance by reactive oxygen species scavenging

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 128, Issue 2, October 2026.
Significance Statement Apple (Malus domestica) is one of the most extensively cultivated fruit trees worldwide, playing a crucial role in agricultural economies. However, soil salinization remains a significant challenge that severely restricts apple production, especially in regions affected by secondary salinization.

S100A1 Promotes MDM2‐Mediated KLF15 Ubiquitination to Regulate ID1‐Driven Tubular Injury in Diabetic Kidney Disease

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 18, 30 September 2026.
High glucose upregulates S100A1, enhancing MDM2–KLF15 interaction and K48‐linked ubiquitination of KLF15. Degradation of KLF15 relieves ID1 repression, promoting ID1 upregulation, inflammation, fibrosis, tubular injury, and DKD progression. ABSTRACT Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of end‐stage renal disease globally.

Cross‐Scale Energy Transfer and Scale‐to‐Scale Energy Conversion During the Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract This study investigates cross‐scale energy transfer (CET) and scale‐to‐scale energy conversion (SEC) during magnetic reconnection by employing the scale‐filtering approach in a particle‐in‐cell simulation. Our analysis reveals fundamentally distinct CET patterns for electrons and ions. Electron CET is primarily governed by the flow CET.
