Thermodynamics of the pseudo‐knot in helix 18 of 16S ribosomal RNA

Biopolymers, 2018
AbstractA fragment of E. coli 16S rRNA formed by nucleotides 500 to 545 is termed helix 18. Nucleotides 505‐507 and 524‐526 form a pseudo‐knot and its distortion affects ribosome function. Helix 18 isolated from the ribosome context is thus an interesting fragment to investigate the structural properties and folding of RNA with pseudo‐knots.

On the arrangement of genes for 28 s and 18 s ribosomal RNA's in Drosophila melanogaster

Journal of Molecular Biology, 1968
Abstract It is known that 130 or more genes for both 28 s and 18 s ribosomal RNA are present in the haploid nucleus of wild-type Drosophila melanogaster. Furthermore, the two kinds of genes are different and are clustered in a distinct locus (bobbed+).

Systematics of Holometabolous Insect Orders Based on 18S Ribosomal RNA

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 1993
Phylogenetic relationships of 19 species representing nine holometabolous insect orders and three outgroup orders were examined using sequence data from two-thirds of the 18S nuclear ribosomal RNA molecule. Of 1330 aligned nucleotide sites in 19 taxa, 460 were variable and used for phylogenetic analysis.

Nuclear retention of 18S ribosomal RNA by human myeloma cells

Cell and Tissue Research, 1979
Normal quiescent lymphocytes regulate their ribosome content by selectively degrading newly synthesized 18S ribosomal RNA. Unlike actively dividing HeLa cells, lymphocytes retain 18S ribosomal RNA in the nucleus after synthesis instead of immediately transporting it to the cytoplasm.

[26] In vivo analysis of plant 18 S ribosomal RNA structure

1993
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses in vivo analysis of plant 18 S ribosomal RNA structure. The ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) are involved in multiple molecular interactions with both protein factors and other RNAs in addition to having an extensive intramolecular secondary structure of their own.

Evidence from 18S ribosomal RNA sequences that lampreys and hagfishes form a natural group.

Science, 1992
Lampreys and hagfishes (cyclostomes) traditionally were considered to be a natural (monophyletic) group. Recently, the consensus of opinion, based largely on morphological analyses, has shifted to a view that lampreys are more closely related to jawed ...

In vitro transcription of ribosomal RNA on phage λrifd 18 DNA

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis, 1978
In vitro transcription of ribosomal RNA was studied on the DNA of the transducing bacteriphage lambdarifd 18, which carries an rRNA transcription unit from Escherichia coli. rRNA synthesis was preferential at all polymerase/DNA ratios tested, and at the optimal 0.3 weight ratio nearly 60% of the transcript was rRNA.

Differential inhibition of 28s and 18s ribosomal RNA synthesis by actinomycin

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1969
Abstract Low doses of actinomycin inhibit the synthesis of 28s ribosomal RNA to a greater extent than 18s ribosomal RNA in phytohaemagglutinin stimulated lymphocytes. Under these conditions the excess 18s RNA continues to enter the cytoplasm for extended periods.

A T1 ribonuclease fragment present in 18 S ribosomal RNA of Novikoff rat ascites hepatoma cells and absent from 18 S ribosomal RNA of HeLa cells

Journal of Molecular Biology, 1975
Oligonucleotides, produced by digestion of 32P-labeled 18 S ribosomal RNAs from Novikoff rat ascites hepatoma and HeLa cells with T1 ribonuclease, were mapped by homochromatography fingerprinting. The fingerprint patterns from the two rRNAs were quite similar and 18 of the separated large fragments had corresponding migrations but one fragment present ...

18S Ribosomal RNA genes of insects : primary structure of the genes and molecular phylogeny of the Holometabola

, 1996
The 18S ribosomal RNA genes of 19 insect species, including 12 Holometabola, were cloned and sequenced. The genes of the insect species investigated so far vary in length from 1,809 to 3,316 bp. The genes were aligned according to the secondary structure
