Abstract Chicks were able to tolerate large dietary doses of the herbicides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), the only adverse effects being a reduction in food consumption and growth rate. A level of 5000 mg 2,4,5-T/kg proved fatal to chicks; a similar level of 2,4-D, while not resulting in death,

Oregon-R Drosophila melanogaster males were fed medium containing 0, 250, and 1000 pm of 2,4,5-T to test the mutagenic effects of this herbicide. Both levels of the herbicide increased the number of sex-linked recessive lethals. This increase in mutation rate was found to be significant only at the 1000 ppm concentration.
