Emergency Response to Australia’s Black Summer 2019–2020: The Role of a Zoo-Based Conservation Organisation in Wildlife Triage, Rescue, and Resilience for the Future

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
Modern zoos are increasingly taking a leading role in emergency management and wildlife recovery. In the face of climate change and the predicted increase in frequency and magnitude of catastrophic events, zoos provide specialised expertise to assist ...

Spoken Expressive Vocabulary in 2-Year-Old Children with Hearing Loss: A Community Study

open access: yesChildren, 2023
Through a cross-sectional community study of 2044 children aged 2 years, we (1) examine the impact of hearing loss on early spoken expressive vocabulary outcomes and (2) investigate how early intervention-related factors impact expressive vocabulary ...

PSR J1740--3052: a pulsar with a massive companion [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2001
We report on the discovery of a binary pulsar, PSR J1740-3052, during the Parkes multibeam survey. Timing observations of the 570-ms pulsar at Jodrell Bank and Parkes show that it is young, with a characteristic age of 350 kyr, and is in a 231-day, highly eccentric orbit with a companion whose mass exceeds 11 M_sun.

A Radial Velocity Study of CTCV J1300-3052 [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2012
We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the eclipsing, short period cataclysmic variable CTCV J1300-3052. Using absorption features from the secondary star, we determine the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary star to be K2 = 378 \pm 6 km/s, and its projected rotational velocity to be v sin i = 125 \pm 7 km/s.

The binary companion of PSR J1740−3052 [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters, 2011
Abstract We report on the identification of a near-infrared counterpart to the massive (>11 M⊙) binary companion of pulsar J1740−3052. An accurate celestial position of PSR J1740−3052 is determined from interferometric radio observations.

Best Practice for Identification of Classical 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency Should Include 21 Deoxycortisol Analysis with Appropriate Isomeric Steroid Separation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Neonatal Screening, 2023
There are mixed reports on the inclusion and use of 21 deoxycortisol (21DF) as the primary decision marker for classical 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Lipid Metabolism Is Dysregulated in the Motor Cortex White Matter in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesMetabolites, 2022
Lipid metabolism is profoundly dysregulated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet the lipid composition of the white matter, where the myelinated axons of motor neurons are located, remains uncharacterised.

Cognitive ability and metabolic physical health in first-episode psychosis

open access: yesSchizophrenia Research: Cognition, 2021
Cognitive impairments are a core feature of first-episode psychosis (FEP), arising before illness onset and antipsychotic exposure. Individuals with chronic psychosis experience poorer physical health while taking antipsychotic medication, but health ...
