Toblerone: detecting exon deletion events in cancer using RNA-seq [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2023
Cancer is driven by mutations of the genome that can result in the activation of oncogenes or repression of tumour suppressor genes. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) focal deletions in IKAROS family zinc finger 1 (IKZF1) result in the loss of zinc ...

Potency Testing of Venoms and Antivenoms in Embryonated Eggs: An Ethical Alternative to Animal Testing

open access: yesToxins, 2021
Venoms are complex mixtures of biologically active molecules that impact multiple physiological systems. Manufacture of antivenoms (AVs) therefore requires potency testing using in vivo models to ensure AV efficacy. As part of ongoing research to replace

Spoken Expressive Vocabulary in 2-Year-Old Children with Hearing Loss: A Community Study

open access: yesChildren, 2023
Through a cross-sectional community study of 2044 children aged 2 years, we (1) examine the impact of hearing loss on early spoken expressive vocabulary outcomes and (2) investigate how early intervention-related factors impact expressive vocabulary ...

PSR J1740--3052: a pulsar with a massive companion [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2001
We report on the discovery of a binary pulsar, PSR J1740-3052, during the Parkes multibeam survey. Timing observations of the 570-ms pulsar at Jodrell Bank and Parkes show that it is young, with a characteristic age of 350 kyr, and is in a 231-day, highly eccentric orbit with a companion whose mass exceeds 11 M_sun.

Emergency Response to Australia’s Black Summer 2019–2020: The Role of a Zoo-Based Conservation Organisation in Wildlife Triage, Rescue, and Resilience for the Future

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
Modern zoos are increasingly taking a leading role in emergency management and wildlife recovery. In the face of climate change and the predicted increase in frequency and magnitude of catastrophic events, zoos provide specialised expertise to assist ...

Best Practice for Identification of Classical 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency Should Include 21 Deoxycortisol Analysis with Appropriate Isomeric Steroid Separation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Neonatal Screening, 2023
There are mixed reports on the inclusion and use of 21 deoxycortisol (21DF) as the primary decision marker for classical 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Lipid Metabolism Is Dysregulated in the Motor Cortex White Matter in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesMetabolites, 2022
Lipid metabolism is profoundly dysregulated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet the lipid composition of the white matter, where the myelinated axons of motor neurons are located, remains uncharacterised.

Convergence of matrices under random conjugation: wave packet scattering without kinematic entanglement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In previous work, it was shown numerically that under successive scattering events, a collection of particles with Gaussian wavefunctions retains the Gaussian property, with the spread of the Gaussian ('Δx') tending to a value inversely proportional to ...
