Tumor mutational burden as a determinant of metastatic dissemination patterns

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of genomic data to elucidate whether metastasis in certain organs share genetic characteristics regardless of cancer type. No robust mutational patterns were identified across different metastatic locations and cancer types.

Malaria-filaria coinfection in mice makes malarial disease more severe unless filarial infection achieves patency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Coinfections are common in natural populations, and the literature suggests that helminth coinfection readily affects how the immune system manages malaria.

FGFR Like1 drives esophageal cancer progression via EMT, PI3K/Akt, and notch signalling: insights from clinical data and next‐generation sequencing analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Clinical analysis reveals significant dysregulation of FGFRL1 in esophageal cancer (EC) patients. RNAi‐coupled next‐generation sequencing (NGS) and in vitro study reveal FGFRL1‐mediated EC progression via EMT, PI3K/Akt, and Notch pathways. Functional assays confirm its role in tumor growth, migration, and invasion.

Dementia Incidence in Individuals With Parkinson's Disease in the Framingham Heart Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Limited information exists on incident dementia in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) in US community‐based samples. We examined cognitive statuses and PD diagnoses of 183 individuals in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) to establish incident dementia, mortality rates, associations with sex, age at PD onset, and education level.

Neutron scattering study of soft phonons and diffuse scattering in insulating La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CuO$_{4}$

open access: yes, 2004
Soft phonons and diffuse scattering in insulating La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.05$) have been studied by the neutron scattering technique. The X-point phonon softens from high temperature towards the structural transition temperature $T_{s}=410$ K ...

Role of Prednisone and 25‐Hydroxyvitamin D on Bone Mineral Density and Osteoporosis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We evaluated the role of 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), prednisone, and other risk factors for bone mineral density (BMD) loss and osteoporosis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods We calculated the association between 25(OH)D levels and other potential risk factors and BMD measures (spine T scores) and osteoporosis (defined as a T ...

Low-temperature measurement of the fundamental frequency response of a semiconductor laser by active-layer photomixing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
We use the active-layer photomixing technique to directly modulate the output of a GaAs semiconductor laser operating at temperatures as low as 4.2 K. The technique produces modulation with nearly perfect immunity to device parasitic effects, revealing ...

Associations of Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity with Frailty Over Five Years of Follow‐up

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective To evaluate whether rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity is associated with frailty both in cross‐section and longitudinally. Methods Participants within the Veterans Affairs Rheumatoid Arthritis registry enrolled from 2003 to 2022 were included. The exposure was RA disease activity measured by Disease Activity Score in 28‐joints (DAS28)

The role of language in mathematical development: Evidence from children with specific language impairments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A sample (n=48) of eight year olds with Specific Language Impairments is compared with age-matched (n=55) and language matched controls (n=55) on a range of tasks designed to test the interdependence of language and mathematical development.
