New metabolites of the drug 5-aminosalicylic acid. I:N-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5-aminosalicylic acid

Xenobiotica, 1989
1. A new unstable metabolite of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) was found in plasma from healthy volunteers dosed with 5-ASA i.v. 2. The metabolite was prepared by incubation of 5-ASA with rat liver homogenate, and isolated using preparative h.p.l.c. 3. The metabolite was identified as N-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-5-aminosalicylic acid by n.m.r.

Inhibition of Antibody Secretion by 5-Aminosalicylic Acid

Gastroenterology, 1989
We have examined the effects of sulfasalazine and its metabolites sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid on antibody secretion by normal peripheral blood and intestinal mononuclear cells. Sulfasalazine and 5-aminosalicylic acid both inhibited pokeweed mitogen-stimulated secretion of immunoglobulins (Igs) A, G, and M by peripheral blood mononuclear ...

Acute pancreatitis during oral 5-aminosalicylic acid therapy

Digestive Diseases and Sciences, 1990
Therapy with oral 5-aminosalicylic acid for inflammatory bowel disease has been reported as effective and safe. We report two cases of biochemically proven mild acute pancreatitis occurring 2 and 14 days, respectively, after oral 5-aminosalicylic acid therapy was instituted for inflammatory bowel disease. A hypersensitivity mechanism might be involved,

Electrical, enzymatic graphene biosensing of 5-aminosalicylic acid

The Analyst, 2013
We present an electrical biosensing of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) based on a peroxidase-immobilized graphene sensor on a microfluidic paper. The sensor shows a sensitive detection range from 0.5 to 20 μM and a total measuring time of 2 min with a simple fabrication procedure.

Pancreatitis After Rectal Administration of 5-Aminosalicylic Acid

Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, 1990
A patient treated with sulfasalazine for new-onset ulcerative colitis developed self-limited pancreatitis. Rechallenge with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) in enema form (Rowasa) again induced pancreatitis. Recent case reports suggest that the salicylate component of sulfasalazine can lead to the development of pancreatitis with oral 5-ASA administration.

5-Aminosalicylic Acid and Chemoprevention: Does It Work?

Digestive Diseases, 2013
5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA)-containing drugs are the mainstay of therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Intestinal inflammation is the main risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC) in IBD. Hence, all drugs that are able to induce and maintain mucosal healing (MH) may prevent CRC risk in IBD.

Chronic Interstitial Nephritis due to 5-Aminosalicylic Acid

American Journal of Nephrology, 1999
Nephrotoxicity has recently been reported with the use of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) which has structural similarities to phenacetin and aspirin. The present paper describes 2 cases of interstitial nephritis and 1 case of end-stage failure associated with 5-ASA treatment.

The anti-oxidant properties of 5-aminosalicylic acid

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 1996
Oxidative damage to biological membranes is an important cause of tissue injury in inflammatory bowel disease. 5-Aminosalicylic Acid (5ASA) has therapeutic efficacy in Ulcerative colitis, which may be based on its antioxidant properties. We used Parinaric acid as a fluorescent marker of oxidation in an intestinal microvillous brush border membrane ...
