Plant 5S rDNA has multiple alternative nucleosome positions

Genome, 2006
In plants, 5S ribosomal DNA (5S rDNA) is typically found in hundreds of copies of tandemly arranged units. Nucleotide database searches revealed that the majority of 5S genes (>90%) have repeat lengths that are not simple multiples of a plant nucleosomal unit, ranging in plants from 175–185 bp.

High Evolutionary Dynamism in 5S rDNA of Fish: State of the Art

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 2013
The 5S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) consists of one transcriptional unit of about 120 base pairs, which is separated from the next unit by a non-transcribed spacer (NTS). The coding sequence and the NTS together form a repeat unit which can be found in hundreds to thousands of copies tandemly repeated in the genomes. The NTS regions seem to be subject to rapid

Length and sequence heterogeneity in 5S rDNA ofPopulus deltoides

Genome, 2002
The 5S rRNA genes and their associated non-transcribed spacer (NTS) regions are present as repeat units arranged in tandem arrays in plant genomes. Length heterogeneity in 5S rDNA repeats was previously identified in Populus deltoides and was also observed in the present study.

Analysis of 5S rDNA changes in synthetic allopolyploids Triticum × Aegilops

Molecular Biology, 2008
By the example of three synthetic allopolyploids: Aegilops sharonensis x Ae. umbellulata (2n =28), Triticum urartu x Ae. tauschii (2n =28), T. dicoccoides x Ae. tauschii (2n =42) the 5S rDNA changes at the early stage of allopolyploidization were investigated.

[Physical mapping of the 45S rDNA and 5S rDNA to rice prometaphase chromosome].

Yi chuan xue bao = Acta genetica Sinica, 2002
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important cereal crops in the world. The chromosomes of rice are relatively small in size. With the help of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), several rice DNAs have been localized on rice chromosomes. 45S rDNA and 5S rDNA are encoding sequences for ribosomal RNA synthesis. For detecting the chromosomes

Phylogeny of Eucalyptus and Angophora Based on 5S rDNA Spacer Sequence Data

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 1995
Sequences of the 5S rDNA repeat have been determined from four outgroup taxa (Arillastrum group), 2 Angophora species, and 19 Eucalyptus species (including representatives from all informal subgenera). Alignment shows that, as in other plants, the tandemly repeated 5S rRNA genes are highly conserved while the noncoding intergenic spacers are variable ...

Chromosomal Localization of 5S rDNA Genes in Leporinus Fish (Anostomidae, Characiformes)

Chromosome Research, 1999
The large 45S rDNA chromosome sites have often been analyzed in fish. In contrast, little is known about the 5S genes in this animal group. In the genus Leporinus, the NOR chromosomal location has been shown to be very diverse. In the present work, chromosome mapping of 5S rDNA in three anostomids, Leporinus elongatus, L. obtusidens and L.

Cytogenetic analysis in Polypterus ornatipinnis (Actinopterygii, Cladistia, Polypteridae) and 5S rDNA

Marine Genomics, 2011
Polypteridae is a family of archaic freshwater African fish that constitute an interesting subject for the study of the karyological evolution in vertebrates, on account of their primitive morphological characters and peculiar relationships with lower Osteichthyans.

Molecular Organization and Evolution of 5S rDNA in the Genus Merluccius and Their Phylogenetic Implications

Journal of Molecular Evolution, 2009
The molecular organization of the 5S rRNA gene family has been studied in a wide variety of animal taxa, including many bony fish species. It is arranged in tandemly repeated units consisting of a highly conserved 120 base pair-long region, which encodes for the 5S rRNA, and a nontranscribed spacer (NTS) of variable length, which contains regulatory ...

Sex chromosome linkage of 5S rDNA in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Cytogenetics and Cell Genetics, 2008
The karyotype of the rainbow trout is characterized by a primitive XX/XY sex-determining chromosomal system. (Thorgaard et al., 1977). In the present study using FISH we have physically linked the 5S rRNA genes to the partially undifferentiated X chromosome pair. PCR amplified 5S rDNA was used for FISH and hybridization signals indicated that the genes
