Potential mechanisms mediating PM2.5-induced alterations of H3N2 influenza virus infection and cytokine production in human bronchial epithelial cells

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2023
Exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with increased hospital admissions for influenza. Airway epithelial cells are a primary target for inhaled environmental insults including fine PM (PM2.5) and influenza viruses.

Natural co-infection of influenza A/H3N2 and A/H1N1pdm09 viruses resulting in a reassortant A/H3N2 virus

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Virology, 2015
Despite annual co-circulation of different subtypes of seasonal influenza, co-infections between different viruses are rarely detected. These co-infections can result in the emergence of reassortant progeny. We document the detection of an influenza co-infection, between influenza A/H3N2 with A/H1N1pdm09 viruses, which occurred in a 3 year old male in ...

Explaining the geographical origins of seasonal influenza A (H3N2) [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2016
Most antigenically novel and evolutionarily successful strains of seasonal influenza A (H3N2) originate in East, South and Southeast Asia. To understand this pattern, we simulated the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of influenza in a host metapopulation representing the temperate north, tropics and temperate south.

Surveillance in eastern India (2007-2009) revealed reassortment event involving ns and PB1-F2 gene segments among co-circulating influenza a subtypes

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2012
Background Influenza A virus encodes for eleven proteins, of which HA, NA, NS1 and PB1-F2 have been implicated in viral pathogenicity and virulence.

Outbreak of Influenza A (H3N2) Variant Virus Infection among Attendees of an Agricultural Fair, Pennsylvania, USA, 2011

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2012
During August 2011, influenza A (H3N2) variant [A(H3N2)v] virus infection developed in a child who attended an agricultural fair in Pennsylvania, USA; the virus resulted from reassortment of a swine influenza virus with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09.

Amantadine-resistant influenza A (H3N2) viruses in Iran

open access: yesActa Virologica, 2009
Adamantanes have been used for the prophylaxis and treatment of Influenza A virus (IAV) infections worldwide. However, they have limited use because of increasing number of resistant viruses during recent years. In investigating the frequency of amantadine-resistant IAVs (H3N2) circulating in Iran in 2005-2008, we found that M2 sequences of recently ...

Co-circulation and persistence of multiple A/H3N2 influenza variants in China

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2019
The spread of influenza A/H3N2 variants possessing the hemagglutinin 121 K mutation and the unexpectedly high incidence of influenza in the 2017–2018 northern hemisphere influenza season have raised serious concerns about the next pandemic. We summarized

Whole-genome sequences of two influenza A (H3N2) virus strains isolated from Qinghai, China

open access: yesBiosafety and Health, 2021
Influenza A (H3N2) virus has a faster evolution rate than other types of influenza viruses. In this study, whole genome sequencing was performed to better understand the molecular evolution of influenza H3N2 and the protective effect of influenza virus ...

Triple Reassortant H3N2 Influenza A Viruses, Canada, 2005

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2006
Since January 2005, H3N2 influenza viruses have been isolated from pigs and turkeys throughout Canada and from a swine farmer and pigs on the same farm in Ontario. These are human/classical swine/avian reassortants similar to viruses that emerged in US pigs in 1998 but with a distinct human-lineage neuraminidase gene.

An epitope-optimized human H3N2 influenza vaccine induces broadly protective immunity in mice and ferrets

open access: yesnpj Vaccines, 2022
There is a crucial need for an improved H3N2 influenza virus vaccine due to low vaccine efficacy rates and increased morbidity and mortality associated with H3N2-dominated influenza seasons.
